223 vs 5.56 compatibility in Tikka TAC A1

The DCRA introduced 5.56 as an alternative (to 7.62) caliber for target rifles.

They supplied free military 5.56 loaded with 62 gr bullets.

Many different 223 rifles were used to shoot this ammo. The chambers were touched with a throating reamer, or were chambered in 223 Wylde, a standard 223 chamber with a deeper throat.

Hundreds of thousands or rounds were fired without incident.

The military ammo worked quite well and we found the IVI 5.56 was of better quality (accuracy) than the 7.62. I preferred the 5.56 at 300 and 500 yards.

When the free ammo stopped and we switched to handloads, I found that the 223 loaded with the Sierra 80 gr bullet was the accuracy equal of the 7.62 all the way to 1000 yards. At 1000 the 80 bucked the wind slightly better than the 155 Sierra in 308.
