223 vs 5.56

Hello

Can any one tell me if 5.56 is the same as 223. I am buying a Tavor and it shoots 5.56 and some people are telling me (guys at La Baron) that I can shoot 223. WHen I asked for a box of 5.56 nobody at Le Baron new what I was talking about. SO Who can tell me the truth about 5.56 vs 223.

As a Tavor owner, I can tell you their is no problems shooting .223 Rem out of it.
5,000 and going strong.

The PMC 223 ammo MAY have military primers, but I have not been able to confirm it yet.

Canam... how many rounds of PMC .223 did that demo unit plow thru in its travels? lol

As a Tavor owner, I can tell you their is no problems shooting .223 Rem out of it.

consider the above question to Canam... im guessing the demo Tavor that i shot had twice that down the pipe and quite possibly a fair ammount was the remmy PMC .223 ammo.

5.56 in a .223 no go
.223 in a 5.56 let'r rip

kind of like the .38/.357

5.56 nato has more pressure, the .223 is a civilian round with less pop.

I agree with Jennis. Back when the DCRA used DND issued IVI ammo for competitions many shooters had .223's built to shoot 5.56 mm NATO. Some people used them only for short range and switched back to their .308's to shoot 7.62mm NATO at long range. Some even shot their .223's all the way back to 900m using issued IVI ammo.

The only time I have had a problem with shooting 762 in a 308 is on older rifles with surplus primers not going 'bang' My other 700P in 308 win simply loves the port 762 to the tune of .7 all day long

I'm glad I didn't blow myself up shooting that IVI back in the 90's. My Colt .223 didn't know the difference for service rifle.Hey, maybe that's why my bbl is worn. Can't shoot less than 2 moa with IVI. ;)

2 MOA with IVI is a good lot:p At one time (when it first came out) 5.56 IVI was very good. Many DCRA shooters were using it over 7.62 even at long range. But DND fixed that, and 5.56 ended up being just as (in)accurate at the 7.62.

In my 700P I get .5 with hornady 'match' / .7 with port / IVI usually groups at 2.5 + I think you all know what IVI stands for :

'I' M P A CT 'V' A R I E S 'I' M M E N S E L Y

Why did Ruger tell my friend (he e-mailed them) that he couldn't shoot USMC 556 in his mini 14?

That's a good question and a little strange.

Here's a scan of the manual that came with my Mini 14 Target model

Further, here is a quote with link to "Perfect Union" forum with lots of Mini 14 info.
I spent the day today in a Ruger Mini-14 Armorers Course. I thought some
list members might be interested in some information learned in the
class, straight from the mountain....
NATO Chamber: Mini-14's are currently produced with NATO-spec chambers,
not SAAMI. Allegedly, this has always been so. Current production is
only 1/9.

Search this site for further discussions on this .556 vs .223 in Mini 14.

I think the Mini 14 is listed as .223 for political reasons. If it says .223 then it can be said to be a "sporting" gun. If it says .556 then that means "military use only"

For a whole lot more info on .223 vs .556 read this from AR 15 site- Ammo Oracle. Link is to PDF for easy to read/print/save

5.56 are a little tight in my Stevens 200 .223 - that is, it takes a lttle effort to fully rotate the bolt over. The leade (or throat, or the neck - whatever you want to call it) is longer than the .223 Rem, as a result the shoulder angle is a khunt-hair sharper to accomodate heavier (longer) bullets. But they still do chamber and shoot. My buddy owns a Tikka, and the the bolt will not close around the same round at all. It's pretty much a crap game based on the tolerences of the chamber if they wil work or not.

That is why the rule of thumb is that a .223 will cycle WITHOUT INCIDENT into a firearm that is chambered for 5.56 Nato, and that it is no recommended to try the other way around.

Try chambering one first before you buy case lot. Otherwise, you might being selling them to either Jennis or me fer cheep:p
