.223 ? Only if you have the right ammo available to you .
If you reload take a look at the Barnes TSX in .224 .
Obviouly there are a lot of better choices but a lot deer have dropped from 22 centerfires in the past.

In Nosler reloading handbook, I remember reading that 223 Remington loaded with 60gr Partition is as effective as 30-30 on deer at 100 yards. That being said, 6mm is the minimum deer caliber in many states and provinces...

Everyone that has had stellar success using a 223 to kill a deer step up.....
223AI with a 45gr TSX at 3800fps vs 300lb mule deer at 161 yards. Wonder who won?
45.1 grains after being plucked outta the offside shoulder.
Managed to push himself about 5 yards after dumping on his nose. Ended up 15 yards from bullet impact site, but that was only due to him rolling down the hill till he ended up in the brush.
Those of you who think that the 223 isn't adequate really need to assess what you think you know about what it takes to kill deer. Holes in vitals, with bullet upset. Choose your angles, and poke holes in them. Deer are not tough animals to kill with proper bullet placement. Hundreds of thousands of them every year are killed with the lowly 223 or smaller cartridges.

I am going to get me a .223 this year for deer camp, just to say I did it, LOL. I am thinking a .223 Barnes TSX will knock a deer pretty dead!
Yep.....The lowly 223 is fairly effective when paired with proper bullets.....Mind you, I've only killed a few with it, out to a few hundred yards......And I haven't really wrung it out all that much, considering I've only seen/taken broadside shots, and quartering away shots, and a couple THS with it.....
Bullets not headstamps, kill things. Put them where they need to go, and don't worry about it.
However, without fail, its killed stuff quicker and they've travel less distance that stuff I've shot/seen shot with the 300RUM, 300wm, 300rsaum, 300wsm, 30-06, 7rm, 7wsm, etc.........

223's an awesome deer round as explained in the countless "xyz for deer?" threads.
Yes it is. Fairly popular in the 43 states (IIRC) that its legal in down south. Quite a few guys use them for culling purposes, and in New Zealand its also very popular if the guys I talk to there are any indication.
Mind you, thats not strictly the 223, but it is .224" bullets. The 22-250, 22-250AI, 22TTH, 223, 223AI, 22-243, 22CHeetah, etc etc etc are all fairly similiar in that its pretty much only the velocity that changes......
No pics but the 170ish lb whitetail doe I used my .223 with a 62 grain federal fusion on at 70 yards went down so fast I didn't know where she went. Next year my buddies are loading up the tsx bullets in their .22-250's and carrying them for a week. I think the reason so many of us shooting the centerfire .22's notice deer don't go far when hit is we shoot them more and are really picky about our shots with them.
Might even buy an XCR!!!!!! Semi Auto goodness!!!!!!
Nope, won't work.
Can only kill deer and other big game animals with a 223 if its a traditional walnut and blued rifle.

You can add the Winchester 64gr. Powerpoint, Speer 70gr. etc. etc.
.223's are used for deer culling because if you are not too picky on shot placement they will drag themselves into deep brush to die.
That way their bones will not be left in the field to pierce tractor tires.

I agree Ontario needs more laws and therefore more lawyers. BTW any cull I was on wanted head shots. And yes we used .223
