.223 vs deer?

The calibers you mention really don't have a 250 yard reach now do they. The 223 doesn't drop that much at 250 but energy is real low. That answer your question?

No, it doesn't answer the question, it dodges the question. You insinuated that a guy with a .223 would lose his ethics and discipline becuase he saw a trophy at 250, and that the .223 was marginal at that distance.

30-30's trad MLs and bows are all "accepted" deer hunting tools, so what does the hunter do when confronted by a trophy at 250 yards? Lose his schit and ethics and blast away? Or do they stalk closer and be sure of a clean kill?

Why is only the guy with the .223 the unethical guy? How does a firearm and cartridge force a guy to take marginal shots?

250 with a bow is unethical even by your standards. If you want to hunt trophy deer with a 223, do so where legal, I don't care. For someone spouting off about the 375 Ruger ad nauseam you sure picked a sissy caliber to defend.
 
ok ok ok, OP here, and this is getting close to stupid territory..... you guys get any closer and your gonna get abducted by a Liberal..... why not take your "debate" to a private corner (PM) and just have at it.... cause this isn't helpful. I asked a question, I got an answer, its over.... no reason to behave like children
 
A 243 win should solve all youre questions. Great for coyotes too.:D

Tacticool guns are for the rifle range to impress friends with their chitty accuracy, but fun fire power.

In the field accuracy is king, with only one shot and no one to impress!.

250 with a bow is virtually impossible. 250 with iron sights on a 30-30 or trad ML is possible, but likely a poor choice for most people.

Either you missed the point (that a man with a .223 can make choices on shots just like a man with a bow, 30-30 or ML can) or you are being deliberately obtuse.

I suspect the latter, due t your last comment.....

My .223 will place 3 shots in a tight cloverleaf at 200 yards, and it's a lightweight rifle, it's probably only 6lbs. Many other .223 rifles can do better....Accuracy of the .223 isn't an issue.

Work within the limitations of his gear.Which in all of your examples means getting closer or waiting until the buck comes within range.

The difference is that , regardless of many of the circumstances encountered in hunting, the projectile fired from a .223 cannot be depended on, nor is it proven to be, an effective one shot deer round.

All of your examples are largely accepted as being humane deer hunting tools. The 223 is not. And the reason is it is too small to be dependable.

If any ammo manufacturer comes up with a .223 that they say will be the new leading edge in deer killing technology, let me know.

But for now, I doubt anyone with any credibility would call the .223 a big game cartridge!! :D

There are 2 magic bullets in this world:
  1. 130gr 270 Winchester at 3100fps for deer
  2. 180gr 30-60 Springfield at 2700fps for moose
Other similar combo work as well or better but don't have the Magic ;)
Notice that both are latest, greatest in cartridge and bullet technology

Yes, and any hunter needs to work within the limitations of his gear and his skills. Even using a magnum.:p

The reason I listed those examples are to demonstrate that some hunters choose to challenge themselves. And by using a .223 you will challenge yourself. You shouldn't take marginal shots like you could with some cartridges. I know for a fact that a TSX bullet from a 300 magnum will go end to end on a deer, so a Texas Heart Shot is possible with tthat gear. I wouldn't attempt that shot with a .223. It's all about how much you want to challenge yourself, same as using a ML or bow or handgun or iron sighted 30-30.....

I don't use factory ammo, but Barnes has "intended use" recommendations for their bullets in their manuals. They list the various .224 caliber TSX's for deer.

But for now, I doubt anyone with any credibility would call the .223 a big game cartridge!! :D
