223 Wins :)

SKScanuck;6869933 Okay so it looks like I digressed from the original post (OP) but.....[B said:
.I was hoping to get a caliber that would explode a tangerine[/B] (not the 308) and that is why I got on the 22-250 kick....

Exploding a tangerine is much more bullet selection than the cartridge selection.

I've shot both cartridges and like both, but I doubt there is anything you could do with the .22-250 that couldn't be done as well with the .223 in equal rifles. Yes I know what the ballistic tables say, but when you're actually lying behind the rifle it seems to make less difference. The difficulty in finding an over the counter .22-250 with a fast twist barrel that can take advantage of the new long range bullets, tips the balance towards the .223.

1. Punching paper;
2. Bagging yotes; and
3. Exploding tangerines at 200 yards!

Kinda funny, I was at the EOHC a few weeks back and put 4 tangerines on the target stand at 200 yards. Well I did some paper punching with the M4 at the 100 and switched over to the 204 at 200 to hit the tangerines. It was then I discovered that I left the bolt for my 204 at home.

Okay, so I go back this weekend and all 4 tangerines are still there. Two had 22 sized holes in them. My 204 popped some hols in them and rolled a couple off by hitting them a few times. I had to use my 308 to get them to explode...

The entire time I was reading that I was seeing tangerines as TANNERITE LOL

I have decided to go 223 and have found the rifle. ;)

All I will say is it is a Savage and I will post some pics when I bring it home. :D

Nope, not an Axis. I decided I could not go that route. Poor marketing, if you call a gun "axis" IMHO it needs a "dirty bird" or chrysanthemum. :slap:

As far as I know a 204 is a knecked down 223 while the 22-250 is a much more powerful round. I own all 3 and if I was hunting at distance the abolutely no question the 22-250, punching paper? What ever was close to hand

I wanted a 22-250, ended up getting a 223. So I sent it out to become a 223ai, it will be close enough for me with 45-53 grainers I the 12 twist barrel.

with the 223 you will get a longer life out of your barrel then the 22-250 its a hotter round and has a shorter barrel life then the 223 or 204 if its for hunting id say what ever is in stock and the cheapest ammo range . but that me btw. i took out my new savage 223 this weekend and i love it the accu trigger is awesome :D

Yep, Savage "weather warrior" model, accu-stock, accu-trigger, detachable mag, 1 in 9 twist and stainless steel barrel/receiver.

Was going to wait for a scope but I had to try out the accu-trigger. Feels like a two stage trigger with a very light take up and let off that is AMAZING.

I shot it first, five rounds, then my Rem 700 for 20 rounds. Well, I wish I could put a accu-trigger on my Remington! Anyhow, when I got home I set my 700 trigger as low as it would go and IMHO, it is not even close.

So, I have ordered a scope and will get the rings this week. I am going with a Silver scope and rings because "the carpet is going to match the curtains"!

Yes, I know, choosing a scope based on colour is pretty bad.....

Only when you go ahead and order the nickel coloured one :p:D

Congrads on the new gun...sounds like a critter gitter !

22-250. For all the fire, Brimstone, and drama. I had a Savage 110 with both bolt faces and barrels. I routinely swapped them around depending how I felt at the time. 22-250 soon became my favorite.

I also have a savage 16 in .22-250. Mine wears a Vortex Viper in 4-12x40 and it is DeadNutsAccurate.

Haven't been lucky enough to shoot it at anything alive yet, but it easily prints holes that touch each other with Winchester USA 45gr. jhp and that is just plain fun.

Nice buy!

If you can launch a 53gr vmax at around 3400 fps (benchmark or H4895 should get you close with a 24" barrel) it will almost match the trajectory of a 22-250 with a soft point 55gr bullet. I chose 223, dad prefers his 22-250.

I have heard good things about those little pills. I was thinking of trying some out and if any good, thinking of using them against some 'yotees. Just to compare against my 243.

What kind of a twist do they like best? I have a 1:9 and a 1:12.

I have been trying them in my Sako 222 with a 12 twist barrel. Can only get them to go about 3100fps but can not get them to stabilize. Tried them with H4895, Varget and XBR 8208 with no luck.
