.223

Workin Man, you have a good point, the only thing is I don't want to spend $75.00 on such an old gun, I wouldn't trust it because I don't know what to really look for in used guns, and wouldn't feel comftorable shooting such an old gun, but smacdonald has a good point, I could use that Hornady Leverevolution stuff, I think that would be a much better choice, and I guess I could give the .30-30 stripped down to try to figure out the problem, if not no biggie, just make the first shot count.....

Want to borrow a 303? I have stacks. You pay the shipping and she's yours for the season, plus you won't have to tote your precious 180.

303's are severe killers - especially with that hornady light mag ammo. We were getting 2812 fps chrono'd out of ours. That's a nasty pill for a deer to swollow. Or a bear for that matter. Probably won't do a moose any good either :D

OK, thats funny, seriously, some of the Win 94's (actually the model 1894, the approximate year it went into production) out there are a lot older than some of the Enfields (my No 4 was built in 1943). Nothing wrong with the Win 94 in 30-30, even without the lever-revolution ammo, but the 303 has an edge over it, even with the lever-revolution ammo, especially if it won't cycle properly. If you buy one you can probably sell it next year for what it cost you. Or you could take Can Am up on his offfer (very generous) and only be out about $40-$50 for shipping both ways. You could also try to figure out whats wrong with the 94 you have, or use it as it is. You will probably get good results with any of these options. Personally, I wouldn't try a 223 with factory ammo for deer, especially if I had any of these other options available to me. Pick the 303 or the 30-30 but leave the varmint gun at home (just my oppinion of course).

I was going to use my .223 bluestar this fall but I've moved back to AB and it is illegal here. I had some 70gr barnes triple shocks for it but now I'm going to try my wifes 7.62x39 instead as it is legal here. For the past 10years or so I've hunted with nothing but my trusty old 338win but for the hell of it I'm going small this time ;)

Take Can-am up on his offer, by the end of the season you'll probabley want to buy it from him.
It will be easier to buy a box or two of cheap 180 grain 303 bullets fire a few rounds to get your confidence and then head afield then to work up a load for your .223.
It is the odd deer that offers the perfect broad side shot, with the .303 you'll have way more options for a clean anchoring.

With the right bullet etc you 'could' hunt deer with it but the fact that you ask indicates all the pieces are not together yet.

If you are in fact worried about being able to chuck lots of lead quick go for the .303 gaurenteed it can put 10 rounds on the x faster then your AR.
