223ai?

Hey Kodiak,

Would you mind sharing the velocity you're getting on the 75s and 80s?

Rem 700’s (x2) with 75’s and 1:7” twist 2980fps. 88 gr ELD M are 2800 in one rifle and 2850 in the other. To be fair, that isn’t leaning on either rifle, it was simply an educated guess on powder charges that would probably show good enough accuracy to see what they would do at distance that turned into “don’t think I can improve on that load” loads lol.

Kimber Montana 1:9” twist and moly 75 Amax’s are 3150 fps. I’ve run a lot of rounds through this one and it’s ready for a new tube (it’ll get an IBI 1:7 same as the 700’s) and I’ve messed around with different loads and powders under 75’s for years.

Haven’t tried any 80’s, I don’t see the need as I have a lifetime of 75 Amax’s, and 88’s are an absolute hammer.

Gotta love it when that turned out to be the sweet spot lol.

Those are some pretty slippery bullets to be pushing that fast. 24" barrels?

A guy could do a lot worse than a 75gr A-max or 77gr TMK or similar at near or equal to 3000 fps.

You have to ask yourself what you will use this gun for. Shooting groups? Shooting long range groups? Shooting coyotes or varmints? The answer to these questions will take you down different 223 roads, none of which really need to be AI’d

I dunno, no recoil, slippery bullets, modest powder charges, seems to work for groups, long range groups, coyotes both near and far, deer and other assorted varmints up to moose, seems to work pretty reasonably at all those things.

Pretty much all of the above plus medium game and whatever else I ever get a chance to do with it...as well as serving as a twin to a larger caliber T3x I can shoot cheaply and often.

Perhaps the gain is not night and day different, and not worth the money spent in getting there...but it sure didn't seem like it would come with any other cons. But I know what you mean about the gains being quite slight/perhaps only applying at the ragged edge of those uses

If your wanting an As If cartridge on the .378 head size that actually produces almost enough added velocity to make the juice worth the squeeze, run the 223 ai reamer if far enough to accept a 204 Ruger go gauge. It’s like the Cadillac that Johnny sang about, you will have the only one around and it will push A 40gr bullet to 4100fps with a 26 inch barrel.

I’ve only had one AI, a 25-06. It was fun, but I doubt I’ll bother with Ackley anything again. A good friend shoots a AI’d Tikka 223. Says he definitely won’t bother with it next barrel. It’s easy to make brass last a long time, without the extra Ackley fiddling. But hey, if a guy enjoys the process, nothing wrong with it.

JJ-65,

I'd seen mention of that here and there before you explained it. Sounds like a wicked little devil.

LittleBoyLefty,

Thanks for the info.

204 Ruger

You’d get a 222 Rem Mag AI with a touch shorter neck. Probably something that a cartridge company could do, marketed as the latest and greatest small bolt face overachiever. All the new cartridges brought out lately and no ones come out to attack the 223.

Ruger was set to introduce the 22-204 years ago, had reamers and pre production rifles on the go. Then the free schitt army elected Zero and plans changed…

I'd rather have the 222 Rem Mag. And yes, I own both. - dan

That would be a good one for sure. What are the 204 Ruger brass options and availability?

Hornady, Winchester and Remington for bags of brass. Never had any problems acquiring more than I can ever use. With fur prices being what they are, I sold off 6 of my 204 rifles. Kept 2 and a couple of spare barrels. Still have maybe 16 .223 rifles, they are like tater chips. Can’t have just one.
