I'm shooting F-class with a 6BR. I have a friend that I would like to get involved - I have a Cooper 22BR with a 14 twist that he could use.
Is this rifle/setup useable for F-Class shooting?
Need to now from the experts - what distance would this rifle tap out at?
Could a guy get more than 600 yrds out of it?
What bullet would be the best to use with the 14 twist barrel.
Look forward to your comments.
Thanks

I have no experience with the .22 BR but I'm sure it is a great cal., however your 14" twist would only qualify it for varmints and/or benchrest shooting as you could prolly use 55grain bullets at the heaviest, and they run out at 400 or so yards and are very easily pushed off course by wind once they start to slow down...you would prolly need 7 or 8" twist for longer ranges.

22BR is a wonderful cartridge but that twist is not ideal.

You would be better off with a 223 and 9 twist, then that Cooper.

A 22BR with a fast twist is an amazing shorter distance F Open set up.

A slow twist 22 BR would be limited to lighter bullets; that said, you can certainly shoot 55 grain boattails out to 600 yards quite accurately. The bullets that you are able to shoot, are going to be blown around a *lot* more than the heavier bullets that you will be shooting with your 6BR. Think about it being twice as much wind deflection (it's not quite that bad) - so it's not un-shootable at 300, 600 and beyond, but it would be uncompetitive. But I would imagine that shooting at short medium and long range is probably a lot more important to you and your friend that trying to win an F-Class match outright, at least for now. Shooting with a .22BR with 55s is a helluva lot better than not shooting, so I would suggest you get your friend out shooting it

Thanks for the responses - was what I was hoping to hear:)
I will get my buddy out to the 3, 5 & 600 line with the 22BR and have him use my 6BR for the 8,9 and 1000 line.
This should solve my brass quantity problem and hopefull put the itch into him:)
I presently have some Berger 52gr. Match bullets, was thinking of using those unless someone has a strong opinion on something that would be better?
Too bad my 22BR was not an 8 twist:( I believe it would be a pretty competitive caliber.
At 100 yrds it is as accurate as my custom 6BR:eek:

Take a hard look at something like the Hornady 60 gr V-max. While the 14'' twist is not ideal, I think with the proper bullet and load selection, it should be a usable combination.

If you run the stabilty numbers on match bullets for a 14" twist, there are almost none that stabilize in a 14" twist.

The 22BR is a stunningly accurate cartridge. It would really shine in a 7 twist and paired up with 90 grain VLD's. Unfortunately, not all barrels like VLD bullets, and building a rig for one bullet is a crap ahoot. The 90 grain bullets from a 22BR can turn a rifle into a potent 1000 yard gun. The BC of the 90 VLDs is even better than the best of its 6mm parent.

What you have is an extremey nice varmint rig for shooting light varmint bullets very fast. Yes, it can be used for F-CLass and in calm conditions it will still be accurate to 600, but you might have better success doing short-range benchrest with that gun.

If you were to go so far as to re-barrel, I'd go with a 6mmBR in a heartbeat, or put a 7.7" twist, or a full 7" twist. 224 cal barrel.
