Hey Guys...I have had the urge for years now to get another Hornet (sold my Savage 142 about 10 years ago) but I still have about 500 rounds of brass and dies.

Anyway, I was looking at a few new rifles (Browning A-Bolt, CZ,Ruger 77/22hornet, and the Remington 799)

What I am looking for is info on which is going to be the best base to build a K Hornet from action wise.

I am a fan of the Brownings but know there is probably better. I really like the looks and feel of the CZ but don't really know a whole lot about them.

Anyone have any opinions on what to start with...maybe even a total project and something older....I keep missing the Brno's when they pop up every now and then at the local gun shop.

Most will say the CZ or some such...but i would buy a Martini cadet, BSA type single shot and convert to K-hornet for a kind of nostalgic but functional kick. Of course if your not enamored with single shots like some of us forget it. There are other single shots out there but this is the least expensive and they make dandy little rifles.

I already HAVE a Martini Cadet action. :D

The action I think I would prefer to it, is the Falling Block Works model K action, almost a half scale Winchester Highwall. A scaled Winchester Highwall, would trump the FBW, but I don't think anyone has done them, yet.

Take your time and buy the one that YOU like! :D What I think are the important things to have, may not even register on your 'needs' list.

A bud sold off his Brno a while ago. Nice gun, slick action, funky Euro humpback look to the stock. The CZ's I've looked at in stores were pretty nice, and were good old school wood and steel. Single set triggers, too. The Ruger's seemed pretty nice, and you get to choose from wood or plastic stocks. How many plastic parts on a new Browning? Any?

Or you could go high zoot, and spring for a Cooper, or one of the small custom actions, if you can get one.

Whatever floats yer boat, really!

Cheers

first choice would be a single shot, martini, low wall, etc.

second would be a CZ.

I purchases my CZ with the intent to go K-Hornet, but after getting consistant .50 to .75" 5 round groups, I'll just leave it alone.

Of all my long guns, the little Martini K-hornet is by far the most fun and definitely a keeper....super accuracy and a can of powder lasts forever. :D

I just had one done, a Ruger M77. I used this gun because I got it 2nd hand for the right money, and the gun had"nt done much work. If I was doing it again, I might go CZ. The Ruger bolt is"nt a good system, and the mag can jam up.
Speak to your gunsmith, or whoever is going to cut your chamber. I was offered a deal on an Anschutz, but they (and some others) have the barrels pressed or heat shrunk in place, making them almost impossible to remove.
I"m pretty sure the CZ is threaded in place.
Do you have, or have you tried to get, K Hornet dies? I have been trying to get them since last spring, and hope to have them by this may!(gunstores have let me down, should have just ordered them from the US myself)
good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Also, don"t know if you loaded for the regular hornet, but if you get a "plain vanilla" .22 hornet and shoot 35 gr vmax over little gun and pistol primers, it will amaze you even without the conversion.
The K will hold another 1 or 2 grains of powder, should headspace properly)on the shoulder) and handle slightly heavier bullets.(and most importantly, the rounds look cool!)

I know that Savage makes a nice little single-shot bolt gun, the Model 40 I think it is. Looked like a nice varmint gun with a heavy barrel and accu-trigger. I'd either go with that one or a nice falling-block single shot.

Erik.

I have checked out this one before...wasn't a real fan of it as from what they said at my local gun shop is that its based off of there 22 action only centerfire and chambered in 22hornet. Nice gun and I am sure its a durable as the others...just don't look like it for me.

Who has an action to sell? I am also looking at maybe a really nice Ruger #1 as well.

Ruger #1

I am looking at the #1 so no need for work on the magazines. I think Ruger used to make one in this caliber but can't find a used one. I also want the engraving like the photo so I can hand it down to my boy.

For the guys converting the Martini's to Hornet... Do you use the same barrel or do you have them re-barreled? Seems like the bore diameter of the older Martini would be too tight for the hornet...

If you like single shot, why not get one of these... I wish the CFC would let me convert a pistol action into a rifle, I've seen a few of these pistol floating around... Real nice little action!

It was the #3 Ruger (a carbine, slightly homely version of the #1) that was in 22 Hornet. - dan
