Hey Guys,

What kind of ammo do you guys use in your 10/22's and why?

Let me know what kind of shooting you do to whether it be varmint, target/plinking, etc.

I'm just about to buy my 10/22 and I'm planning on trying a couple different brands to see what my particular rifle likes.

Also if you could, tell me how much it costs for 50/100/500 rounds of your particular brand.

Thanks!

For plinking, I'll feed my 10/22 anything I can get my hands on, it doesn't seem to care. For varmints/hunting, I use Federal Game Shock 38 grain Copper-Plated Hollow Point. Canadian Tire will have a variety of .22lr ammo, go and pick out a few boxes (you can get 500 count boxes for ~$23) and try it yourself. The nice thing about .22's is they're really cheap to feed, so go out and enjoy. :D

Whatever's commonly available, reasonably priced, and cycles the action without getting many jams. Federal bulk 38gr 525 boxes are handy because you can just reach in and grab a handful. American Eagle 40gr is reasonably priced and shoots accurately. American Eagle 38gr is sold by the 400's and costs a little more. It can be harder to get, but has superior accuracy in my 22's. Generally you are looking at around $21 per 500 or 525 these days.

I shoot mostly CCI Stingers out of my 10/22, or sometimes CCI Mini-Mags. I've also shot quite a few Yellow Jackets over the years, but they tend to not feed well in my rifle. I use my 10/22 for shooting gophers most of the time.

I'm looking up CCI stingers/minimags. Does jacketed make it easier to clean your rifle? Does it leave less crap in your barrel or since led is softer (i think), is it easier to clean.

The bullets aren't really "jacketed" the same way that a centerfire bullet it. The copper is more of a copper wash (plated) than a true jacket. I don't think it makes a lot of difference as to making it easier to clean a .22 rimfire, but there might be a small advantage. For a plinker .22 like a 10/22, you don't really need to clean it all that often anyway. From my own personal experience, I find that CCI ammo is one of the most reliable brands out there.

Didn't know that. Good info.

Whatever I can find.....:)...but CCI Minimag is always great (though terribly scarce where I am :( ) , Federal 525's and CCI/Blazer are also faves and much more commonly used....:yingyang:

I prefer to shoot subsonic rounds for target/plinking, but they really don't work well with semis. They just don't cycle the action. When I got my own 10/22, I tried them all, just in case...and found one that the 10/22 likes allot~Federal Gold Medal Target. Here is a link, but a US site; http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=802266

I like this stuff for my bolt action and lever, but never imagined the 10/22 would digest it! Pretty consistent/clean ammo. too.

I've had very good luck with the American Eagle 38gr. hollowpoints that seem to be far sale everywhere. Good for plinking and gophers, easy to find anywhere and relatively cheap.

What about Winchester? Anyone have prefer a Winchester make?

Winchester 333 works well for me for inexpensive plinking/gopher ammo. The price is good and it's plated.

For shooting pretty groups, I use Eley Target.

My 10/22 runs well on any .22LR ammunition I've tried in it, including subsonic. It has a radiused bolt and a Volquartsen extractor.

Always used Federal 550 rd Bulk pack for plinking .
I 've always stayed away fr. Remington used them (tried ) once massive feed probs. Most expensive GARBAGE on the market !!

Chamfer the back of your bolt and they will cycle fine. I use subsonics almost exclusively in my 10/22.

This also reduces stovepipes with a lot of different ammo...

I've had accuracy as good as any with plain old American Eagle, especially with the hollow points....Winchester Power Points have also proven very good. I've had considerably worse luck with Stingers and other 'souped up' ammo. That being said, every gun is an entity unto itself. Your best bet is to buy a box of everything you can get your hands on and let it show you what it likes. Start with the cheap stuff - you might be pleasantly surprised.

If you chamfer the back of the bolt so it cycles easier, with HV ammo does the bolt slam harder into the receiver stop now that you've reduced resistance?
