22LR AR's - which one?

Am I going to get a reply to my question, or are you guys just going to continue arguing?


I'd like to add....I've seen the Mossberg AR-style .22....and it looks cheap. I can't comment on it's functionality, but it felt like it might fall apart when I held it.
 
I have the MP 15-22. Feels and looks like an AR, 2 pins and apart it is. 1500 rounds and shoots like a champ, all types ammo and no cleaning yet.
 
I have ran a CMMG upper on 2 tactical carbine courses. I have almost 3k rounds through it and it is still as good as new. I can tell you it holds up. many mag dumps with no problems. not sure what you will do with it but whatever you can throw, it will keep throwing. it may be restricted but if you want an AR trainer look no where else

The dedicated .22 rimfire uppers are worth the extra cost compared to conversion kits.
If one is looking to replicate training with an AR on a .22 rimfire platform, a conversion or dedicated upper is the best solution as stated by numerous people in this thread.
If it is simply trigger time one is looking for and practicing marksmanship principles, then pretty much any rifle will do, but even then the best solution is to mirror the rifle one is doing the training for in the first place as much as possible. Ymmv.
 
Just to add a bit to my earlier post (#15) I had already upgraded my Stag .223 lower with a Geissele 3G trigger that is hard to beat. When I slide on the CMMG upper, there is no perceptible difference including of course the trigger. Even my sling mounts are identical. The only difference I do feel is the recoil if you can call .223 jiggle recoil. Admittedly, all this cost a few $$$ but that was in the plan.

I have no comprehension issue. The fact is that the OP had requested information about "AR's" & "non-restricted" in the same request. Since "AR's" & "non-restricted" are not mutually inclusive and he did ask for consideration of both, I suggested an alternative to address his non-restricted consideration. Nobody said that you need to approve of my suggestion. Since everyone else is offering advise on "real" AR conversions etc., he really didn't need yet another restricted suggestion from me.

Are you a "thread request definition & comprehension cop"?
 
Getting back to the subject of .22 AR's...... I have been using a CMMG conversion unit in my LMT 10.5" upper for several thousand rounds now. It is actually more accurate than I was led to believe, perfectly good for plinking at 25 yards. However I am thinking of upgrading to a dedicated .22 upper because the .22 rounds seem to clog up the 5.56 chamber after a few hundred rounds and make it difficult to chamber and fire 5.56 rounds until after a thorough cleaning. There are a variety of 16" .22 uppers available, but I would really like a 10.5"-12.5" .22 upper. I am considering importing one of these:

If any one has any Canadian sources for a short barrel .22 upper, I would be very interested.

The mossberg looks cheap, but mine works well. It is very light which has an advantage that you can feel some recoil from 22 lr. I have owned a colt conversion and a dedicated upper. Shooting 22 LR out of a heavier carbine has very very little recoil impulse. The mag manipulation and the safety are different then an AR. To me this is not that big of a deal as you can practice gun handling in dryfire with your AR until the cows come home.

I shoot a Tavor tar 21 and use a mossberg for practice.
 
Been running the Chiappa dedicated upper here.. no issues. Shot it plenty. The polymer build doesn't detract much for me and keeps the weight down.

I did not buy the CMMG mags and hold open adapter, i am currently running Black Dog 25, 32 and 50 rounders. The previous generation of CMMG mags were, in my opinion, a disaster, infact I gave one 10 round CMMG mag away. I would be interested to get your review of the mags and hold open. How is the hold open adapter installed? Thanks
 
Yeah I read that the new mags didn't really hold 25 shots.. more like 20. We'll see. I will have it in a month or so. To install the bolt hold actuator you pull out your pivot pin and place the actuator on top of the magwell/bolt catch area. It sits there. Close the gun and push in the pins and it's installed.

Tell me, did yours come with the forward assist adapter? The description didn't show one.
 
I would think it works with all mags that are compatible with the CMMG conversions.

Here is their video that shows how to file it down if it doesn't fit in your upper.
