Hi guys, I was reading in a sponsors thread about 22lr conversions for the AR15 platform. They were talking about different conversion kits and how some don’t have magazine capacity for them and some do. Can someone please clarify this for me? Which ones do/don’t? What I don’t understand is if all AR15 magwells are the same and there are pistol versions of it, how can there be some brands that are not limited to 10 rounds? Wouldn’t it be treated the same was as the Butler Creek mags with the 10/22?

AR15 platform is restricted regardless of calibre. That includes magazine restrictions. As quoted from the RCMP's website..;

"1. Magazines designed or manufactured for both rimfire calibre rifles and handguns

Magazines designed to contain rimfire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a rifle do not have a regulated capacity. However, magazines designed to contain rimfire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a semiautomatic handgun are limited to 10 cartridges. Magazines designed or manufactured for use in both rifles and semiautomatic handguns are subject to the handgun limit of 10 cartridges.

Example:
Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 rifle and 15-22P pistol chambered for 22LR caliber:

the 10 round magazine is unregulated
the 25 round magazine is a prohibited device"

The 10/22 magazine restriction is a completely different debacle. I've read that there is currently a planned lawsuit about it IIRC.

True AR15s in .22lr, using either a conversion kit or a dedicated upper, do not have a maximum magazine capacity. I have 10, 25, 32 and 50 round capacity mags for my AR15:

Magazines that are made specifically for some specific .22lr rifles that are also available in a pistol version (ie: S&W M&P 15-22, Walther/HK 416, etc) are limited to 10 rounds.

Do you recommend any .22lr uppers? Spectre Ballistics is having a sale on Chiappa m4 gen 2 uppers with 10round pinned mags. Is this a good deal? Will I be in compliance with non pinned mags with this upper?

I don't have any experience with Chiappa uppers, but they are probably the cheapest available and the receiver is plastic.
I have owned a Tactical Solutions upper and currently have a CMMG (top upper in photo) and DPMS (bottom upper in photo). I can highly recommend the DPMS - most reliable and most accurate of the ones I have owned.

If you are interested in general info regarding .22 AR15 uppers, there is a fairly good sub-forum on Rimfire Central:

They are not too popular in Canada, so there does not seem to be much info on CGN and they can be hard to find at Canadian dealers. I know that IRG is bringing in the Kriss DMK22, but only as a complete rifle. See post number 27:
