.22lr for Coyote hunting

no (that being said the first coyote i ever shot was with a 10/22, i was out shooting gophers (hadn't actually started) i saw him coming down the fence line from about 400 yards and just sat in the long grass and waited he followed the cow path right along the fence until he was 10 yards from me, i brought the gun up, he looked at me and i plugged right between the eyes) would i do it again? in the same situation, yes.

would i start out a hunt for coyotes with a 22LR, nope

ethical distance with 22LR, 25yards. yeah, yeah some sniper will come on here and say they shoot them all the time at 200 yards plus etc but you asked "ethical"

used to do it all the time.
when me and my buddy went calling we took a .22 and a 22-250.if we could get them into .22 range that was the medicine they got...if they hung up too far out the noise was louder.
your marksmanship and iron will dictate max yardage...as will your view of "ethical"

yes 100% there may be 1,000,000 better cartridges but a .22lr will kill a coyote dead out to 40-50yds would not try past that and I would look for some Aguila 22 LR 30 gr Super Maximum SP 1750/fps........

i shot a yote out past 100 yards with a 22 was shooting gophers and he happened to come around and got dropped in his tracks i've shot a mini palma comp at 100 and 200 yards and have taken gophers past 300 yards it took about 30 rounds to conect with that gopher but the yote was a victim of opertunity i wouldn't recomend it as an ethical choice i was confident i could put it through its eye and did the gods were smileing on me that day but to specicaly target em there are better choices

50 yards max... Basically the same range as a shotgun with #4 buck

only a shotgun shoots 40+ .24" "bullets" per shot (3")

unless you need quiet, id use a shotgun or another rifle

ive used all types, only time I ever saw one all i had was a shotgun with turkey loads and he stayed just out of range

also remember our Ontario yotes are bigger than those out west

A 22lr will work, but it's not the best thing to use. It'll only be a matter of time before something goes messy. Get yourself a more positive caliber. If you are looking for a small caliber there's the little 22 Hornet, or a 222 Rem.

I would use a .22 if was my only choice because noise was a factor, like others have said, alot of better options out there....that being said, I would never give up a chance of opportunity on a coyote with .22 in my hand, I would not specifically target coyotes with a .22...its shotgun or centre rifle only for me.....

I shot a wounded one with a .22, He was face to face with my dog, called the dog off, put the red dot between his eyes and it was over pretty quick, I'd say about 30-40 yds, I would shoot another one, under 101 yds as long as I knew where my bullet was going.

so from what im gathering here i shouldnt shoot past 100 yards. The reason why i ask is because any time there is a open dear season in my area were not allowed to use anything but a .22lr and i believe a shot gun with certain loads. Dont know which politician thought that was a good idea but thats the law. So im thinking maybe i just wont hunt them during dear season or if i do then bring them in closer then 100 yards.

I think your reading what you want to read 90% of replies suggested within shotgun range (40 MAX 50) and almost 99% have suggested a higher caliber or a shotgun.

I use a 223 or a shotgun, most of the time I have both with me.

As for the rules where you live, why wouldn't you just deer hunt???? Bring a shotgun with you and if a yote comes by make a decision.

Let me guess you got yourself a tacticool 22 and want to pretend your cool.... If that's the case its dumbasses like you who give hunters a bad name, and that's the reason most farmers won't let city hunters on their property. Be humaine 1 bullet per targer make sure its enogh to do the job right the first time out.

completely unethical.

can a .22 kill it? sure. it can also kill a cape buffalo. moot point.

your likely to wound the animal even doing head shots. 1" off and you knock a hole into his jaw, and he runs away to die an agonizing death.

how can anyone here claim it is okay? if you are going to take the life of an animal for your personal enjoyment, then do it responsibly for eff sakes.

a .22? fuuuck IMO a .17hmr is a bad idea too.

Okay first of all where do you get off calling me a dumbass? you dont know me and if you understood the point of why i asked this question you would see i am trying to do the right thing.i even said in a earlier post that i might not hunt at all during dear season because im only allowed to use a .22 or shotgun. I have other calibers to use but im not going to break the law to use them. The fact that you would come on here spouting off like a crazy person calling me a dumbass for no apparent reason really shows some insight to your true character. If you dont have anything constructive to say then dont say it at all.

it's a shame that a fella asks a simple question and gets lip for it... :kickInTheNuts:

pklassen you need to gather a little harder bud.cut that range in half to 50yds or less depending on your skill.
the negative and shotgun replies are likely from folks who have never used a .22 for yotes.Lots of armchair hunters these days...
As I said before we used a .22 for short range and never lost a dog because of a bad hit or being underpowered.Use top end ammo!
The key is using it only in the right circumstance. Can you pass that dog at 75yds if he won't come closer? That's where the "ethics" comes in.
You don't use a sledge hammer to drive finishing nails and you don't need a cannon for a 50yd dog.
As for shotguns,I've never used one for yotes.I could never bring myself to spray holes in a pelt and if your markmanship is so poor that you need to use one, then you'd best stay home and watch some more hunting shows on your couch imo.

I made a refrence to a type of individual, unless you fit that type why would you think I called you anything.

Also there have been a number of threads on this topic if you used the search function you would have found plenty of answers to your question.

If you do infact have other calibers and shotguns why even ask, you must know its not the best caliber, why even chance it?

I stand by what I said, and if you do in fact fit my profile and are indeed using a semi auto to act out some fantasy, what would you call yourself?

LuckyLuc82, did you even read the thread before replying?
