I took my G/F shooting, and now she wants one too.

My recent Mossberg 702 plinkster with black synthetic stock is just a little big for her.

She is about 5'8", mid/average frame. I figure 1-2" off the stock will do, but it's hard to tell. are the pink 702's any smaller?

I would like to have an idea what I need before I go to the gun store.
also, I SEARCHED 6-7x , and checked the newbie forum, I apologize if this has been covered, but I could not find it.

**EGO WARNING***

...she'll out-shoot you no matter what!

I think the 702's are all of same dimension. "youth" models seem to be for bolt 'folks...

64's are smaller rifles as is the MArlin 70 and (I hate to even type this..), the ruger 10/22.

2cents, for free...

I got m'lady a "matching" 64 (mine, the 'ol 64 was too small n' skinny for her!) so we could shoot similar rifles(idiot me should have gotten her something much less accurate so we'd still be competitive). Her's was a 64B and was actually bigger and, preferred by her (and anyone other than me).

Take her to a shop or, pick something similar with wood. Wood is forgiving and, can be cut or, built up as required.

My Marlin 70 was pretty tiny as are (shudder) 10/22's...

Half the fun in getting into a new hobby is researching the things that go along with it. In this case, it might be a lot of fun for her to research what gun she wants and, of course, you could offer your experienced input also.

I'm still very new to shooting so am still with my first and only gun... a ruger 10/22. I'm well pleased with it so far, but I had a tonne of fun researching various brands and models of gun in advance. I changed my mind a half dozen times and am glad I did :)

Ladies love shopping, don't steal all the fun from her, let her pick her own rifle. 597 in evolution kind of stock may be a tad shorter. And those... khm... 10/22's, although I wouldn't personally ever, not for my girl.

My better half is about 5'-5" and i had a fun time finding a rifle that fit her, i decided on a savage mk2 after dragging her to a half dozen stores... She likes the fit of my ruger but gets mad when she shoots groups over 1/2"... The savage accutrigger is an awsome learning tool for new shooters, it builds confidence and the rifle itself is simple enough for her to clean and maintain.

If it were me, I'd get a few different style of .22 into her hands and find out what she likes: could be a single shot, pump, lever action, bolt action or semi auto. Don't go cheap on a first gun, and generally wood is preferred over synthetic. Once you know what she prefers, go shopping, (what I'd do) watch the EE (equipment exchange) on this site for a great deal on what you're after. I would suggest she would really like a 10/22 that has been tricked out.

Hey everyone thanks for the replies. I was looking at the mossberg site and from the pictures they seem to sell "BANTAM" 702's with a stock about 2" shorter...but it is hard to know for sure and I am not sure how common they are.

I will keep all the suggestions in mind and let you know what we pick.

At 5'8" she's probably taller than most Asian shooters. Lots of Asian guys shooting regular firearms are that height. +1 on try them out till she find one she likes.

I'm a tall guy, yet I sort of like shooting small-ish, even some youth-sized guns. It's a matter of preference and of course, very subjective. On my most recent trip to the gun shop, I talked myself out of buying a Marlin 795 for about the 5th time. I will get one eventually, but think you should consider one for your GF. Very light guns, pretty small too.

My wife had the same "problem" when she was beginning to shoot. We tried lots of different models before she settled on a Browning SA-22 that fit her like a glove . It's hard to pry it out of her hands now.

lol

I had m'ol fav...a Cooey 64 I bought 25 years ago. I bought a second (larger...poke fun if you wanna) 64B for m'lady and, I to enjoy together...

I liked it. When she outshot me with "my" rifle it stung a bit more than being beaten by her with her rifle...

Egos aside, it's also nice to have his n' her's rifles. Take to shop and, let her pick one she can outshoot you with! The ego is the only pain...all else is pure joy.

I recently bought and read Jeff Coopers The Art of the Rifle. In it he comments that most factory rifle stocks are too long for the average size adult male. My years of buying and shooting tell me that he was absolutely right.
I recently got back into rimfire shooting and bought the youth CZ Scout bolt .22 for me. I appreciate good (well fitted) wood, and runing the gun with a bolt.
My wife bought a 16 inch barrelled 10/22 and the wood to metal fit was so bad the screw would't keep the action in place over a few shots. I put it in a short Ramline synthetic stock for her and she is as happy as a clam.
I don't think the gun weighs over 4 pounds, is not more than 32 inches long and she doesn't have to run the gun. And it now shoots very tight groups right to point of aim.
I also flipped the factory blade around to take the glare of the white diamoind out of her eyes and set it for the very large square opening which almost creates a small aperture effect. She much prefersw that sight picture.
I bought her 10 magazines and preload them for her before every shoot and she almost purrs.

The Marlin 795 or tube fed model 60 are the best little semi auto 22's for the money. I have never seen a semi auto 22 as accurate strait out of the box as these rifles, and I have one of each.

I for one would never start a new shooter out with a semi auto. New shooters sometimes forget that as soon as they fire a round, the gun is ready to fire again. As well, using a semi sometimes results in people not taking their time to aim, because they know that if they miss, they can quickly shoot again.

From my personal experience, women are more interested in precision... than fast follow up shots.

And as others have said... get ready to have your but kicked! You see, women are fast learning... and they don't have that "testosterone" problem most guys have. As in, you tell them what to do, what not to do... and they'll go and do as instructed.
(While most guys will just nod at you, and do as they know it should be done)
