.22LR for learning precision.

Hi All,

I'm new to firearms in general. I recently got my PAL/RPAL, and just purchased my first pistol.

I want to get a bolt action .22 to learn precision shooting basics, have something for my wife to try out, she wants to shoot a .22LR and later have something quality wise that won't be junk or need to be upgraded to be decent. I do realize that I will need glass, but I'm saving that discussion for later.

From what I have been told at the LGS, a CZ 455 is my only choice. Looking here I see a lot of Savage Mk II and of course a bunch of 10/22's. LGS says both are inferior to CZ.

I'm not into modding it all out for this and that. I just want a 22 that runs well out of the box, good build quality and above all else, accurate. Throw some nice glass on there and then have it whenever I want it without having to make a list about what needs upgrading to make it shoot well.

Am I basically stuck waiting for god knows how long for a CZ 455? I don't mind spending $500 on it.

If that's the way to go, what model would you all suggest?

I ordered a savage mark ii fv-sr for the same reasons. I want to be a better shooter without breaking the bank. Cost me $300 taxes in. I can get decent glass and rings everything in for lessthan a cz.
 
Did you look into a CZ at all, or is the MkII strictly a budgetary decision?

I don't get the difference in accuracy from what I was told at both my local LGS.

Budgetary, ive read there is very little difference, and the wood stockon the cz will get dinged and look aweful.

Oh ya and Savage is made in Canada. That is huge sway to me.
 
I would go to your local gun club, maybe someone there has a CZ/Savage they'd let you fire a few times so you can make your own opinion on the different rifles. It's really not much different then compairing Chev vs. Ford vs. Dodge vs. Toyota, each has their pluses and minuses and it comes down to personal preference. I myself love my Savage TRR-SR, it feels great, shoots well enough for me to be very pleased with it, having said that, I have not fired a CZ, they may very well be more accurate, they may be more comfortable, I don't know. I do know I am very happy with the rifle(s) I have now.
 
Personally I would look into the ruger 10/22 great gun for the cost. deadly accurate and doesn't break the bank. Plus there are all sorts of stock upgrades and fun tactical stuff built for this rifle. Got mine about a month ago and I LOVE IT!
 
I bought a used Mark II BV off the EE for about $325 shipped. Sure the CZ would be a really nice rifle and probably is a shade more accurate, but the Mark II is a good value. Mine has done a 1.25" 10 shot group @ 100 yards with cheap Winchester T22 ammo. Try to find a subsonic round.

yup got my sister the savage mark II for her 21st birthday, not sure what model it was sorry, but it had the heavy target barrel and came with a 3-9x scope, its pretty deadly accurate, and reliable enough that i now want one for myself, and at under $300 with a scope? good buy imo. they have a decent resale value to, so if in awhile you find it isn't cutting it you can decide if you want to upgrade to a CZ.
 
Hey OP, I see you've already been to my Savage MK II thread. I was originally looking for a CZ 455 Tacticool as a trainer for my 308. I like the CZs and I used to shoot Anschutz match rifles back in the day. The Savage is not in the same league, but you've seen my results.

The CZ 455 tacticool won't be in Canada for a few months so I picked up the Savage to try it out. I'm happy with it and it allows me to get out and enjoy the season. IMHO, better to get out and shoot with the rifle you got, rather than waiting for one you dreamt about.
 
I was somewhat at the same situation few weeks back. Was looking at 10/22, Savage and CZ and finally decided on CZ. For 10/22, I wanted a stainless stell barrel but the polymer stock just feels cheap so passed on. However, kinda regret it cause I could have got it and buy a nice wood stock for it.

For bolt action, was introduced Savage and CZ at my LGS. Was told both can shoot equally precise. However, upon close inspection of those in stock, I find the CZ has quite a bit better finish. Although CZ costs higher, I ended up with a CZ 455 Standard.

I also shot someone's Savage Mark II (not sure the exact model), and for me, I can't feel a difference as far as shooting goes. Both have nice crisp trigger and accurate. For precision I believe you will also need to budget in the cost of a scope. A good scope can easily costs more than the gun.
 
I like the CZ. if given a choice, I would still buy a cz. I didn't like the 10-22. The savages just feel cheap to me, and I don't enjoy shooting them very much. Of their models, the american and varmint patern stocks are my favorite. I have found that the varmint takes longer to have barrel distortion under heavy bench shooting.
Proline shooters in calgary had some 455 varmints in stock when I was in last week, Canadian tire on southland drive in calgary had some varmint 452 in stock (the 452 is considered the more desirable version), and badger arms supply usually gets 455's in stock, as well as a few 453s. You'd love a 453 as a bench gun... It has a special trigger in it that is a regular trigger when the bolt is cycled, but becomes a hair trigger when pushed forward. hair trigger is great for long range gopher shots as well.... ;) Badger also had a 452 shilhouette for sale last time I called. It's a synthetic/stainless compitition gun. Really nice.
 
I also Have a 455 supermatch for sale... I haven't advertised it, as I"m not dead set of selling it, and wanted to bed it first. want $575 plus shipping. It has a jeweled bolt, and pillars for bedding made, but not installed....
 
I've heard that the Savages are good shooters, but the CZ are a step above in quality. Both would be good choice to practice precision shooting. If you shoot decent $5/box ammo like SK std +, you'll get best results.

CZ may be considered as "heirloom" quality... in that can be passed on and appreciated by a next generation shooter. Look for a used rifle if you're on a tight budget. I bought a used 452 for under $400 and won't consider parting with it. It is very accurate and 100% reliable.
 
As with everyone else here...Marlin, Savage, CZ.
All will outshoot 99% of the owners...the CZ is the one to buy if you like fit/finish or want something to hand down to your kids.
All will put 5 shots in a quarter at 50yds (which I don't see the point of...I don't know why so many think this is the limit of the .22LR).
Go out to 150m...that will test your ability to read the wind, compensate for bullet drop and practice your hold/breathing/release, etc.
With the right ammo these guns will shoot 3" groups (or better) at 150m...that's a test of skill :)
 
I have a CZ 452 bought used on EE that had some trigger work and springs it is a dream to shoot and that trigger makes me a better shooter than I ever thought I'd be.

We also have a Ruger 10/22 stock and I like it but it does not even come close and if modded I doubt it would even then.. Chalk one up to CZ
