.22lr for partridge hunting ... What are you using?

The grouse in my field this year were more skittish for some reason and I couldn't get within 50 yards of them. We tended to use the marlin 795 with a lower power vortex on it. The cz 452 with a 3 to 9 leupold works well too for the longer shots. I also got some with the cz 455 with open sights. Lots were taken between 50 and 80 yards(hence the scopes) and ammo was whatever the gun shot best with. I also picked up a savage FSS just to use on the trails but it always seems to take 2 shots for one to connect.

Grouse hunting is just plain fun...they aren't picky on ammo either, whatever rifle you can hold straight does the job.Typically mid day sees grouse out and about on logging roads between the morning and evening deer/ moose hunts.Great opportunity to introduce kids to hunting, generally multiple opportunities, low recoil guns and concentrating on head shots sharpens their shooting skills. My 13 year old granddaughter 'graduated' to a mule deer this year...

Brno 581 with a Sightron SIH 1.75-4X32mm with parallax tuned down to 35 meters and usually using Winchester subsonic ammo.

For those of you running scopes on your .22s, do you use Kentucky windage or have some of you found a preference for reticles with some sort of bullet drop hash marks?

Last couple years been Ruger 77/22 and a vx1 2-7 scope with whatever will shoot under 3/4 at 50yrds. Shot lots in high school with dads 39a marlin lever filled with 1/2 box of shorts.

Hello fellow New Brunswicker, came here to tell you I like to use my williams peep sight on grouse. Agree with never seeing more than 2-3 grouse at once. Haven't used a scope on one yet. I'd imagine a scope would only have the advantage over the aperture on a grouse sitting still at 30+ yards. There's my .02 cents, Happy hunting.

My problem is that my front post is dark and the aperture darkens my field of view. Twice now I've had to pass on a grouse because it was trotting along between trees and sticks in shaded woods ... Just couldn't get a clear sight picture. As well, I've had to pass on one that was in some brush. I could see pieces of it but it was a little too far for a clean shot. I'm thinking that a scope would have been gotten me my snack in all three situations.

one of these is always in the toolbox of the quad when in ruffed grouse country. The short barreled one now has a more compact scope and the folder now has tech sites and a factory barrel.

You must be a young fella. Wait till you're over 40 and your eyesight starts to go and the front sight starts to get fuzzy. Another advantage is that it's sometimes easier to get a perfect zero with a scope than some types of fixed open sights.

An inexpensive Nikon pro staff is my first choice but I currently use a Holosun HS403G on my 10/22. It works great and quick target acquisition.

CZ 455 Vt / Bushnell Legend 5-15X40mm
I leave it set at 5x and parallax set at 20yds.
Works for me.

Norinco JW-20. Extremely light weight, never had a single FTF, or FTE. Breaks down nice and compact, and eats everything I put through it. The most I ever stretch out when grouse hunting is 40 yards.. and this rifle does it with ease. I am blown away that out of all my .22s, this cheap busted up rifle I bought used on the EE would have a higher head count that any of my other rifles. It is my go to small game rifle, and tonight it put the best part of my dinner in the frying pan.

I can't offer much suggestion for optics as I've had better luck with irons. This browning knock off has been very quick to put on target. Setting aside my scoped 10/22 has forced me to get better at getting closer to game.
