Just curious for the communities thoughts on this one. When looking for a pest control .22LR semi auto in your opinion is a guy better to

A) purchase a ruger 10/22 and upgrade it bit by bit

B) build it piece by piece slowly over time until its done

C) save up and purchase a fully assembled package such as a DAR-22 from someone like Dlask Arms

It's a gun for pest control mostly gophers. Not interested in 17 HMR or .22-250 so don't bother this is a .22 LR only build.

Keep an eye on the EE for a build that is close to what you want.

Some one might sink $1k into a nice build and sell for $700-800, even if the build parts are not what you want throw them up on the EE and get what you want.

A 10/22 build is not a priority at the moment but if I see a build that is close to the direction I hope to build, then I plan to grab it.

Keep in mind that you can spend $1000 in additions to a $400 gun, and the gun is only worth half of that. Better to let someone else take the loss by purchasing a build on the EE.

Ruger 10/22s are nice guns, I have one. Marlin Model 60s are less expensive and more accurate, yes I have one of these too. If you are out to lower the vermin population get the Marlin, no you won't find all the neat after market goodies that you find for the Ruger, and it will take a few hundred rounds to break in the Marlin, but you'll have the better gun for the assigned task. My Marlin Model 60 is the blued synthetic stocked version.

If you're in need of a pest control gun immediately, then option A is the only way to go.

If you already have another .22 that "will do" for now, then I'd suggest option B will give the most options to create exactly what you want.

Option C is out, because it solves neither of the above problems.

Or just have a lot of fun with a really easily customizable 10/22 platform and scratch the new gun itch over and over again by switching out parts.
Non stop fun...

Buy a 10/22 and find some ammo it likes.
I would consider mine to be minute of gopher out to 100 yards with round nose CCI MiniMags and Blazer.
CCI MiniMags hollow points . . . just over 6" at 100 for five shots.
With a 5.5 pound trigger that is the only upgrade at present. Have a Timney on order and I won't shoot it until the new trigger is in place.
Buying a 10/22 is a luck of the draw thing.

Ruger supplied the following torque settings: The scope base adapter screw should be torque at 10 to 15 inch pounds, on the V-Block screws they should be toque to 10 to 20 inch pounds and the Takedown Screw should be torque to 15 to 20 inch pounds.

A 10-22 - if you can get an older one it may even be better - will do what you need. The two mods I made for "performance" purposes were a Clark Custom trigger swap-in, and the bolt-catch mod.

D) Buy a bolt action Savage Mark II heavy barrel

I shoot gophers out to 120 yards with one. Works very well.

IMG_0153.jpgThis cost me $1450 back in 2013. I sold it for $800,a couple months later.
I don't know if I'd do it again, but I would like to have another Tac sol barrel, for my current 1022.

Remington 597 with a heavy barrel is my critter gun.

D) Buy a bolt action Savage Mark II heavy barrel

I shoot gophers out to 120 yards with one. Works very well.

I've had 10/22's, the 597 (not the heavy barrel, but the standard one never seemed to overheat), and the Savage MK II heavy barrel with factory Boyd stock.
The MK II is absolutely amazing (well, it doesn't pattern so well at 220 yards, but I can consistently hit .410 shell husks at 110 yards.)
The 597 got boring at 50 meters as the bullseye would get ragged after 20-30 shots, and the cheap Bushnell scope wasn't good past that.
My 10/22's were never consistently accurate, but if you want a platform that allows every possible option, its cool.
The plus to the 597 is the 30 round magazines, which have been stone cold reliable for me. Not a cheap or viable option with the 10/22 anymore.
I've kept the 597 and the Savage. I love the iron sights on the 597 as well.
The 597 was under $230 all in (scope, rifle, 30rd. magazine.)
The Savage was under $500 all in, but is a beautiful piece of kit.
Apart from a tripod, I haven't found the need to change anything on either of them, and as a plus, they love American Eagle 40 gr., so they eat cheap.
A CZ bolt action will probably do the trick as well.
Everyone will have an opinion, that's mine.

The old Ruger 10/22 worked fine for this guy with a 3x9 Redfield scope on it and no mods . I never had a dead Groundhog complain . I have no idea at all why people have to spend so much money on mods. unless the trigger stinks. or from what I have heard a Savage boltaction heavy barrel 22 with a nice scope. or a CZ boltaction 22 with a decient scope . just use good ammo and place your shots.
