I don't want to re-chew this one, but I going to get a new 22 pistol (save a few bucks at the range, I've been doing the math lately) and need some concrete advice. I'd prefer personal experience. I'd like to keep my cost below $450 or so, I've bought enough toys the last few months. The walther p22, ruger (of course) have caught my eye, but I have an open mind.

Search this forum for the P22 and the Sig Mosquito, and I believe you'll decide for the Ruger, or possibly the Browning Buckmark.
My Ruger Mk.1 (5.5 inch bull barrel, target sights) is reliable, accurate, isn't picky about it's diet, and has a great trigger. Keep an eye on the EE, or Armco's or Reliable's sites (see the page header) for used pistols. The Ruger Mk.2 is probably easier to find than the Mk.1, and has the better mag release, plus the bolt stays open on an empty mag, unlike the Mk.1.
FWIW, some feel the Mk.3's are less enjoyable than the 2's with all the "safety features" and safety warnings it's festooned with :), and the mag safety hasn't helped the trigger feel much.

Ruger MKII is a classic. If you can find one you are better off than with a MKIII.

Sig Mosquito with threaded extended barrel, not only can you screw on a fake silencer, but you can screw on a flash suppressor from a AR 15 rifle. I LOVE mine. You can find it for around 450 depending on whether you want all black, or a stainless slide.

No offence, but IMHO, the only advantage to a threaded barrel in Canada, would be the addition of barrel weights to enhance accuracy.

You must be 25 or younger...........;)

PS: Ditto on the Ruger Mk II!!
Edit:I have a Star Model FR for beginner shooters (often no more than 300), but it cannot hold a candle to the Ruger for accuracy at 20-25 yards.

no, no. No more Rugers, c'mon guys how can you stand those, yuck. Ugly as sin.

P22 is great pistol but grip is too small for most adult people. Other than grip issue it is awesome little gun.

Don't kbnow anything about sig's - to me anything other than Ruger is good :).

Browning Buckmarks are all good shooters and you may find one within your budget. The ones I tried were great pistols, especially the model with heavy barrel, that one seemed to pont at "10" on its own.

I've shot Bullseye competition with the; Ruger MK II, Browning Buckmark 5.5 Target, S&W Model 41, and a Colt 1911/A1 with a .22LR conversion kit.

Hands down my favourite was the Browning Buckmark 5.5 Target, although I did quite well with the Model 41 and Ruger MK II.

I used the Browning to shoot Speed Steel with too.

It has an integral Weaver rail, so you can easily mount a red dot if you want.

I'll second the Glock idea and add another choice: the Kimber 1911 in .22LR. It doesn't get much better in terms of quality and aesthetics.

If you can find one look for a High Standard. You probably could get a used Citation model in your price range.

I've got Rugers, S&W 41, a couple of High Standards, and a number of other .22s. I still like the High Standards the best as far as trigger pull and overall general balance and feel in my hand.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Rugers or the Browning Buckmark. I personally like the P22 but don't yet own one and haven't put more than 50 rounds through one. Don't overlook the revolvers like the Ruger single six or Smith and Wesson's, although you'd probably have to go used due to the price of the Smith's.

This is funny, because all these ideas are good, and they're the ones that made me ask. I do have a glock 17, but 399 seems like a lot for gun parts, when 399 will buy you a nice gun. I like the walther look and no-one has anything bad to say other than the grip being small. Thats probably not too bad, my wife's a size 2 and probably will shoot it the most. What's the real difference between ruger mark II's and III's? Is it huge? Because mark III's are dime a dozen new. Also, I notice some like the p512 mark III are better priced with more features (like adjustable sights), but have a plastic frame. Is the frame cheasy? I'm used to composites, and ussually they're fine, but the plastic on my stainless 10/22 was tres poopy. Felt like a toy, and didn't stay on for more than a week.http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firea...&type=Pistol&bct=Yes&caliber=.22+LR&x=20&y=11

Anyone else have a thought on the mosquito? It's a little more than I want to spend but if people wax poetic about it I would stretch... Jams? Accuracy? Add-ons?

Sorry if this bores a lot of you, but I'd rather ask you than the salesman.

I do not have one, but a friend in Alberta had one.
It was very finicky about ammo, NO cheap cheap plinking ammo for you!! He also mentioned lubrication problems, you certainly cannot run his gun dry and expect any sort of reliability!

He found CCI Mini Mags worked great, and not much else.....

How about a s&w 422? Has a light alloy frame, and the mags are the same as a model 41/46 if you ever upgrade. DelSelins had one for $249 that I was looking at. Supposed to be pretty nice, inexpensive, guns. They also had a couple of other guns you were interested in (ruger, browning, and sig).

i have a glock 17 with the conversion, nice thing is you can buy it and take it home, i really like my conversion kit, put a lot of rounds thru it all the time. i shoot ipsc with my g17 and like to put rounds down rage with my conversion, even pratice draw times and reload times with the 22.

In regards to the P22, don't forget that here in Canada we have to have a min. barrel length, so the image you have of a P22 is wrong, the only legal one we can buy is the Sport version which has a massively ugly barrel weight/block on the end to cover the extended barrel.

And as for my Sig Mosquito suggestion and the threaded barrel, someone said I must be young for recommending it. Barrel length is a factor once again in this case, either you get a extended barrel which is convered with a ugly weight, OR you choose the threaded option, it's one or the other, no other choice due to barrel length. And I would rather have the option of screwing things on to the end(fake suppressors, or muzzle brakes), instead of being stuck with a big metal block on the end of the barrel. IMHO
