Hi guys Im new to this site and guns in general so heres my question I received my .22 from my grandpa just before he passed away and its an older marlin bolt action with no dove tail for scope mounts what is needed for in order too mount a scope???
you can drill and tap the reciver for a scope mount. but if it was your grandpas i'd say leave it with irons. (just my 2cents) you get a savage MKII they are inexpensive and wonderful guns I've had my for over 10 years and she has been put through hell and still shoots dime sized groups at 50 yards and just bigger than a toonie at 100. It's bone stock not a thing done to it.
thanks for the quick response ndb86 and I normally would leave it the way it is but one of the iron sights broke off so I was gonna put a red dot on it
of you can get a mount like this. just drill and tap holes in the receiver. I mave a pre WWII savage 4c that was set up like that from teh factory at it works wonderfully.
well i'm only one voice i'm sure others will be along shortly that could point you in the right direction for a replacement sight. if not, i'm sure you can find that scope mount or soemthing similar at just about any good gun shop or at one of the dealers listed above.
I have 3 Marlin 81Ds...two D&Ted for scopes and one left original. They shoot like hot da*m....I love 'em. If for sentimental reasons, leave as is but if you really want to see what they are capable of...invest in scoping it. I have no regrets at all. they are a $100-150 gun in nice shape.
I have an 81DL as well. It was my Dad's. Mine still has the rear side mounted aperture sight and brass front bead (missing the hood).
I haven't had it drilled and tapped for sentimental reasons but I'm sure that it would be accurate with a scope on it. It shoots pretty tight with the aperture sights and my old eyes.
i too would suggest tring to track down a replacement sight for it before drilling and tapping for a scope.NDB86 what make is the scope mount and do you know who carries/sells them? would like to find one similar to fit a savage 340B 222.
well im all about keeping old guns original but this gun doesnt have the original sight on it my grandpa just wielded a piece of steel on it a machined a v notch into to it. btw thats the piece that broke off and i lost it in the snow so.. |\/|

your best bet is to just go into your local shop and they can set you up with eomething that should work for ya. call/email one of the dealers i'm sure then can get you set up as well.
