Since its possible to use .22 short, .22 long and .22 lr in a gun chambered for .22lr, can you shoot .22 lr out of a gun chambered for .22 mag? Maybe thre would be magazine issues? Not sure. Any help is appreciated.

pretty darn sure thats a no no.....22 mag is a different category all together...don't own a mag, but if i'm not mistaken, the cartridge is a larger dia..than a regular .22 round....don't hate me for this..:D i'm not totally sure...

I have seen .22's fired in a .22 mag by mistake. 6 shots & every case split. Also at 20 yards the acuuracy was terrible.

So I would say that it is dangerous & not practical. Too bad as it would be a lot cheaper.

Now this is a don't try this at home story. Years back, I tried this very thing. I chambered Remingtons .22 Cyclone LR load in my Savage .22WMR thinking the same thing: .22 S, L, or LR rifles. I knew the bullet diameter difference, but was also aware that CZ rifles have tighter bores. The LR round fired after two strikes from the firing pin in the same spot. The rim is thicker on the magnum round. The bullet fired with no ill effects. I tried this several times and each time the results were the same. Two strikes to fire, the bullet traveled out the barrel and hit the back stop. I never checked for accuracy. There is no need to do this. If you have a WMR, you probably already have a LR too.

.22 WMR is a longer version of the old .22 Winchester Rimfire (WRF), both of which use .224" bullets instead of .222" like 22 S/L/LR.

.22 WRF can be safely fired in a .22 magnum, but not .22 LR.

I had an old revolver with interchangeable cylinders. .22 RF, and .22 mag. Accuracy was marginal, but it showed no real difference when shooting .22rf or .22mag rounds through the magnum cylinder.

the shorter .22lr may dirty up the chamber making the .22wmr harder to chamber.
I beleive I used the right terms there.

You'll most likely split the cases and I don't know what accuracy would be like. I imagine the .22 LR will end up ricocheting down the barrel to some extent due to diameter difference, small as it may be.

Thanks for your help guys. I was thinking of buying a Remiington 597 magnum, so I would kill 2 birds with one stone. I would get a 597 that shoots .22lr and some sort of .22 mag all in one gun. Maybe ill just look at the 597 in .22lr then, since I dont need a magnum..... yet.
