I was using some leftover .22s this weekend, I lost the box so I don't know the specs but. It seemed the 160 yard target was just not going to happen. I have some Viper hyper-velocity 22s that supposed to do a 4.7 inch drop at 100 yards if zeroed t 50. I think it said 1350 fps. Has anyone ever seen a hotter load, or removed the bullet and added some More powder to spice it up, maybe a pinch of fast powder to get a little more speed?

i've shot my .22 using various bulk high velocity ammo out to 200yards hitting a 7.5" gong, I think i'm going to start playing around shooting my .22 at farther ranges again, you got me interested in trying it out agian.
cci stingers,i think they are around 1500fps.

1640fps

Let me know when you try that. I want the video rights.

Which do you want, speed or accuracy?

To test accuracy, a person (someone with experience) could take a few 22s apart, and put it back together WITHOUT any more powder. My bet is accuracy will expand to broad side of barn.

Adding more powder? Laugh2

+2 send video of remains...

thats only out of a 24" barrel they use a slower burning powder to get it pushing the bullet for longer

the powder used in normal .22lr is fast it just about stops burning at 12"-16"

the faster stuff tends to be less accurate

if you want a .22 rimfire thats faster try a .22 mag

Bandit86, if you view any successful long distance 22 LR shooting videos on youtube, you might notice a few common factors: One is a very accurate rifle platform, two is optics with a nice series of reticles so one can use many differing crosshair positions, or something similar to that effect. Another very important factor is accurate ammunition. This usually means match grade ammo in and around 1050-1175 fps.
Stingers, Vipers, & Velocitors, etc, are designed for quick blowup on small critters and not fly splattering accuracy.
Most of all, tearing apart rimfire ammo and adding powder is something most of us would not do, or certainly not endorse.
If you need more punch than 22 LR, most normal people would just purchase a 22 Hornet or even better a 223 calibre rifle.

Educate yourself and you just might keep your eyeballs intact for a few more years.

What you should know about 22 caliber cartridges varmint hunting effective range:
  • 22lr: 75m
  • 22mag: 125m
  • 22 Hornet: 150m
  • 222 Rem: 200m
  • 223 Rem: 250m
  • 22-250: 300m
22lr is strictly a short range cartridge.

A few years ago, I bought a .22 conversion kit for my 1911 as I was shooting steel gopher matches. In order to find a good load out to 65 meters I chronoed over 15 different brands of .22. One important fact came out, what the manufacturer states on the box, won't necessarily happen when it comes out the muzzle of your rifle or pistol. If you have a specific job for the firearm in question you are going to have to test various brands. Be careful with CCI Stingers, it is wonderful ammunition but because of the longer cartridge case won't necessarily chamber properly in all .22 firearms.

Adding a pinch of powder may increase the pressure enough to blow the firing pin straight out of the bolt into at best your cheek. You may very want to pull the trigger myth buster style, with a mile long string and standing behind your partner.

Adding powder to a 22 rimfire would make you an instant Darwin Award candidate.
Those little pills are loaded for your safety the way they are.
Messing with that can only mean trouble.
I regularly shoot 200 meters, and even a bit at 300 meters, using a very accurate
22 rimfire and high quality match grade ammo, which, BTW, is listed at 1059 fps.
My 5-shot groups at 200M on a calm day are often under 1".
FWIW, good optics sure helps as well. I use 6.5-20, 24x or 36x Leupolds.

There is a few simple answers here.

#1 - Get a .22 mag, or 17 hmr

#2 - Shim your scope base, or get a tapered one to allow more adjustment out of your scope.

#3 - Figure out the drop, and use 2 targets on top of each other. Aim at the top one, and print groups on the bottom one.

My best results come from Standard Velocity ammo.

It's the set up that is your issue not the cartridge. You have to change the equipment to make up for the drop that the .22lr has.

No need, federal bulk i was plinking at 250m, sighted in a 50.
Sure as hell no group, but i could get a 12X12 plate in the rain a good 15 out of 25.

Another vote for quality standard velocity target ammo in a good rifle. I have shot out to 200yds with no problem using it in a couple of rifles. As noted, an accurate rifle and good optics with enough elevation to cover the drop is what you need, not more velocity.

There you go... the answer to your question!

Part of your accuracy problems comes from the supersonic ammo and a light bullet. When the bullet goes supersonic it loses stability. So for long range it will destabilize at least twice in flight. Sure, a 22lr can go quite a long ways but hitting the broad side of the Skydome is iffy from those ranges too.
