I purchased a S&W model 41 last November. It was made 1980-1981. I understand this gun can be particular with its appetite for ammunition. I experimented with several varieties and found a wide range of quality. The CCI Sub-sonic works flawlessly regards whether or not the gun is clean or dirty. The CCI Green Tag works well but is too expensive for my skill level. All other varieties I’ve tried have been frustrating. Federal, Remington, and Winchester have given me all sorts of trouble. Last trip to the range I tried Winchester Dynapoint GT (Target) copperplated that I purchased for a good price at Canadian Tire. In 10 shots at a target, 3 failed to eject properly and 2 more didn’t fire at all even though the rim of the case was deeply dented. Thinking a problem with the gun I tried CCI again for the next target with no problems.

With automation of manufacturing one would think that the quality control across manufacturers might be more consistent. Have other shooters experience similar things? Having asked the question, it comes clear to me that I’ve done all the experimenting I need because CCI works well and I should just stick to it.

I have shot 100-150 rounds of Winchester Dynapoint GT out of my Savage MK II and my Winchester 490. I had maybe 10 fail to ejects with the MK II which is unheard of. No extraction issues with the 490 and 4 fail to fires.

I will not use this ammo in my bolt but it is deadly in the semi. The fail to eject is a bit of an odd issue for a bolt gun though.

I use CCI Standard velocity for both my 41's old and new.. flawless..

You can shoot minimags but I would change the springs to 8lb and use a buffer to protect the slide from undue hammering.

CCI Tactical bulk works well also, if you can find it. I bought 8 boxes of these last year at Bass Pro last year on sale for $19.99. Work very well also.

There is a reason why you walk into Canadian Tire, and the only .22 ammo left on the shelf is Winchester, and they have dust on them. LOL.

And Walmart has Win. Wildcats for $3.49, collecting dust.
Although they do work well in a GSG1911-22, and my High Standard loved Thunderbolts. Go figure!

The Blaser bulk stuff has been the most reliable for me in many of my guns. I have not seen a 5250 case in some time, but the 525 boxes are around, and at reasonable prices.

When the cause wasn't cold temperature and thick oil, my Ruger mk1 for the most part, disliked CCI bulk the most. Primarily it has a steady diet of Federal bulk (which in the guns I've shot it through, does not yield stellar accuracy) which, typical with rimfire pistols, will stove pipe very occasionally. Inexpensive rimfire rounds, because they are mass produced on their own expansive level, will have failures... it's just how things are. Apart from spending more for premium we just find what works best for our plinking pistols. I like to keep some 40gr waxed lead for more accurate shooting like CCI auto match, and (to be disdained by some) Thunderbolts, but for the most part my skill with pistol is not superb, so accuracy gains, while present, are mostly limited by myself not the ammo.
