Hi,

I've got a Mossberg 151k semi-auto 22 that I'd like to mount a scope on. It has grooves in the receiver for mounting. I'm not sure what I should be looking for in a scope.

It'll be used primarily for target shooting out to 200 yards at best. I see historically they were often mounted with Weaver 4x tip-off scopes, but technology has advanced since then. I'm looking for advice on specs I should be looking for.

I'm also not planning to spend a ton of money either. There's no need to spend a great deal on a cheaper rifle like this.

Most scopes will work just fine but make sure you get a Rimfire specific scope. I have just a cheap tasco 3x9x32 that works just fine out to 100 yards. Havnt tried it at 200 but I feel my 12x magnification would be better suited for that.

While I don't agree that a rimfire specific scope is necessary, having an adjustable objective feature, commonly seen advertised as "AO" is a nice feature. I have a Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40AO on my Savage and it's great and was around $300.

what is the AO for?
How's the diamondback compared to viper pst?
what rings did you get
where did you buy the scope

I want to get a nice savage mark 2 .22LR and scope for benchrest shooting

i have a vortex crossfire 2-7 on 10/22...works great
$119 @ canadian tire Belleville...
John was very helpfull, set me up with nice rings & base mount too

Is it a Crossfire, or Crossfire II? Just got a Crossfire II (4-12x40 AO) for my Anschutz, and the rings come in this week. Can't wait to get this set-up, and sighted-in. This German rifle has been collecting dust too long. :)

For $119, its probably the old model...

I know I slagged vortex in the past, but I picked up tbe crossfire II 4-12AO from sfrc for my .22, and its pretty good glass for the $$. Reg duplex is $199, bdc reticle is $209.

The adjustable objective feature is nice as you set it to roughly the range you are shooting at and it helps with parrallax issues.

The Diamondback is definitely not on par with a Viper PST as far as glass quality goes. It's decent but not as good as the PST.

I have Leupold rings on it and I bought the scope at Wholesale Sports.

All these prices are way more than I want to spend. I don't think I should have to spend more than $50 for an effective rimfire scope for this project.

If I had an Anschutz match grade target rifle, I'd consider spending more, but for a Mossberg 22 that's been through the ringer it just isn't worth it.

I've placed an ad on the EE, so if any of you had a used rimfire scope in my price range, PM me.

Hey Kirk~I'm not flush with $, that's for sure...but I used to feel the exact way~nobody could convince me that a scope should cost more than about $75-$100. I agree, a $1000 scope on a $100 .22 makes no sense...but on the other hand, don't assume that everyone suggesting scopes costing more than $50 is sitting on a ton of cash. My opinion evolved as I got some trigger time behind crappy scopes and I simply decided that if I'm going to scope a gun (and subsequently, ENJOY that gun) it had better be wearing some 1/2 decent glass. To many CGN members, a Crossfire II IS probably a crappy scope (in the Nightforce/SB crowd) but take my word for it, they're a good choice for a field-grade .22. That Crossfire for $119 probably wouldn't be bad either, though I'm more impressed with what I see on the new Crossfire IIs. $50 won't get you much, and almost for sure...nothing you can use at longer ranges.

I bought a fitco scope for $20 one time, but spent 2x that on Advil to get rid of the ensuing headache it caused by looking through it.

$50 will get you garbage.

Btw, I put that vortex on a 1938 Mossberg 46B .22 that was my grandfather's.

I'm not talking about a brand-new scope. I'm looking at used/second hand. I wouldn't object to paying upwards of $100, but $300 on this rifle is overkill.

I should also point out that 200 yards is the my optimistic goal. I doubt I'll actually make it.

Save your $50 and spend it on ammo,,, you’ll end up like many before you (myself included) spending $50, then $100, then $150 on a scope for your 22. Look for something in the $125 to $175 buy quality not quantity, you’ll save money in the end.

Well, head on down to the EE and see what's there. Best to go for an AO on rimfires.

Adjustable Objective. gives you the ability to manualy focus the scope for a givin distance. rim fire scopes are fixed objective at 50 yards, center fire scopes at 100 yards (unless they are AO "adjustable objective")

I had a cheap tasco 3-9x32 on my 10/22. It worked fine until I took it hunting and it took a knock. One of the lenses cracked rather readily in my opinion.

I've since bought a Bushnell Rimfire from Cabela's.ca. It came to around $75 after shipping, etc but I think it's a decent scope for a field gun. I can't justify spending much more than $100 for a scope that's going on a .22 especially when 9 times out of 10, if you're taking it anywhere other than the range, you're probably not going to need to take a shot from much more that 50-75 yards.

My .02
