22LR Shotshells

Until this morning I didn't even know these existed... couple questions
1- Are they hard on rifled barrels?
2- What's the effective range on them for gopher control? One page tells me sub-10 feet which doesn't help me. Hoping to use them around the farm yard.

I have used them a little over my shooting life ( 60 yrs.) BUT for the last 15 years I have used them for chipmunk & blackbird control
around my house , with complete success. I shoot them in a rare Cooey Model 75 SMOOTHBORE . 20 ft. is usually my longest shot. I would say larger birds or animals ( pigeons / squirrels) could be killed @ maybe 10 ft.or less .
Collecting Cooeys & other .22 rifles for years , I have found getting smoothbores very difficult . Yes the new Henry
is expensive . Older smoothbores are collectible & also expensive . If you can , go to a .410 .

No, not hard on barrels.

Range, somewhat further than contact with the muzzle, but not much more than that. If you have a smoothbore .22, they are fit for clearing sparrows from the barn.

Otherwise, don't waste your time.

Has anybody tried the 45lc shotshells you can buy? Same idea as the .22 ones. Thought it might be fun in my revolver but don't want to damage it.

No, but I made my own 44mag shotshells from cut down .303 brass. Lead pellets well not damage a gun any more than lead bullets. Why would you think otherwise?

Knew a gentleman who did a lot of research on bats years back. He would use a smooth bore 22 with the shotshells to collect specimens. Said it was a painful process, you couldn't really lead them due to their sporadic flight, rather you just kept taking guess shots at where they might go next.

See, that's what I thought, but since they were so cheap I just put them on the shelf until I thought of a purpose for them. Thanks for the info.

are they the cci one with the blue cap that's all tenda seems to have if so they might use a stinger case witch is slightly longer and if not used in a sporting chamber won't work well.

Not very constructive my friend. No reason for you to be disrespectful. I'm sharing a simple warning with the OP. May I suggest you read some user reviews about the product...... or maybe take the advice of a guy who has experienced the issue. I know you've used them, so maybe think about it.

Ok. I'll take your word for that. However, what I said about ricochet is true. I had a 3/4" plywood target at 20 yards. The shot was ricocheting back. One BB hit me square between the eyes. True story

being #12 shot it wouldn't have any velocity or energy after hitting anything to do damage. it won't go through tin roofs in barns but works well on pest birds and rodents.
