22LR Suggestions

Afternoon,

Looking to get into a 22LR and wondering what things people learned when they got in to it at first. Areas you feel you could have skipped in terms of equipment, rabbit holes you felt were worth it, or not. Just want to hear peoples experiences as well.
 
When I firsted started out I thought semi autos were king s hit.
I bought a 10/22 and shot and enjoyed it for a couple years.
Then I bought a Cz453.
The 10/22 rarely came out again and was eventually sold.
I did buy another 10/22 takedown for a backpacking rifle but it too rarely gets used.
It's a good firearm but the CZ outshines it on every level.
Buying a quality bolt action and a decent scope changed everything for me. I still enjoy and admire it after thousands of rounds and almost 20yrs in my possession.
I'd recommend a quality bolt action and scope to start. Even if it takes longer to acquire. It's so worth it

The new 457s are nice, the older 455s have better finish and are just as customizable, but with less plastic. The 452s are the epitome. I no longer own any semis. Besides my CZs, I have a Cooey 85, a Toz 8, a Zastava M22, a Nork 13" JW15. The CZs are my favorites.
 
I learned you'll have more than 1 22. So don't beat yourself up for not getting the best from the getgo.

I really don't got 1 that does all. Every one got a purpose. Some heavier for bench, some lighter for off hand, some for club shoots, some for iron sight only. Most are single shot.
 
The clear trend is that your going to go through more then one..... :)
Don't stress it too much and buy what you think is cool and get ready to learn that what is cool now, might not be as cool down the road of knowledge and experience.... :).

That said it's always a good idea to pick the brains of people that have travelled the path you are about to take!

What type of rimfire shooting do you want to do or see yourself doing?
Is this a first gun or a first .22lr?
 
If you want to miss out on all the fun of buying crappy rifles, struggling with them, trying to figure out if it's you, the rifle, ammo, scope.. or all of the above that are failing.... skipping al the fun part that you will later remember and laugh at.... then read along:
Get yourself a CZ457 MTR 20" barrel in 22LR, get a new Arken EP5 Gen2 5-25x56 with TOR reticle. This set is not extremely expensive, but will bring you years and years of very competitive level of precision, enough to compete on national level.
 
I also recommend the CZ 457. Not terribly expensive and a very well built and accurate rifle if you do your part. Look into a CZ 457 LRP or CZ 457 Range.
 
Well, after a while you might find that .22 shorts and .22 CB shorts are kind of cool

You might find yourself looking at .22 pump or lever action tube fed that feed short, long and long rifle. You could single feed them in a bolt action.

When you get here you will wish you had a time machine
 
I like the vintage bolt action stuff personally..Toz-17, Savage model 3, Norincos (vintage is 20 years old!), Cooey model 60, Lakefield single, etc. Never been a 10/22 fan though I have a 50 year old one, quite nice. I have a TM 22 that I'm on the fence on. As the others have said it kinda depends what you want to do with it. Just blasting steel at the range/ plinking, you can't beat a semi.

I agree with most authors - cz455 or 457 is hard to beat - tikka t1x is just as good and if you aren’t worried about aftermarket parts, the Bergara bmr, anschutz 1400, Sako quad, howa 1100, Ruger pr are all good options- I have had all of them because 1 22 is not enough- I don’t shoot competition so they are all pretty equal at 50 meters because they all shoot better than me - the only one I personally have had issues with is the savage mkii - 8 inch groups at 50 meters

Might need a time machine just to find some shorts... :)
 
DDepends on what you want to do if you're going to do precision shooting go with the CZ 457 or a Tika t1x if you're going for gofers maybe a Ruger 10/22 you can get Mighty expensive into deep rabbit hole either way it's a lot of fun
 
Tikka T1x. CZ’s are fine, you you like traitors and upgrading parts.

If you just want to shoot, buy the Tikka, and skip all the CZ hype.
