Is it generally safe to use 22Mag ammo in a 22LR revolver? I got a Sauer and Sohn "Westerner" revolver, the cylinder is certainly long enough to fit 22Mag ammo, and just how beefy the cylinder is gives me the impression it would be fine. But are there any general rules about this?

Wouldn't normally care, but I've got some 22Mag ammo with nothing to put it through.

The 22 mag shouldn't fit if the chambers are sized correctly. A friend of mine rechambered an old Hi-Standard .22 revolver to .22 mag, with no problems. We put thousands of rounds through it.

It would only be safe in a revolver with both a separate 22lr and a 22Mag cylinder. The cases are considerably different sizes, 22mag shouldn't fit in a 22lr, and 22lr should be really loose in a 22mag.
Like any not necessarily safe behaviour, it might work until something blows up.

.22 WMR uses .224" bullets, just like most centrefire .22s. .22 S/L/LR use .222" bullets.

Convertible revolvers with two cylinders use the larger bore diameter.
