22magnum??

Trap load is more then enough for foxes. They die easy. I think the mere presence of a firearm is more of a deterent the bore size. If we could carry in Canada it would be my first choice. Smaller lighter easier to carry more ammo and a center mass hit at kicking distance will let the air out fast. Over penetration is not much of a factor. For fun place a 1/2" sheet of pine board in front of a water melon and pop a 40 gr round through. You might just be surprised

I have both a rifle [CZ455 Varmint] and a revolver [S&W M48] chambered in 22 Mag.

This is actually a pretty effective round, and I would not hesitate to carry my M48 for defense.

I am reluctant to mention this, but I shot a full grown cow moose with one shot from an old
Mossberg 22Mag [640K "Chuckster"] about 50 years ago.

Don't ever underestimate the 22 rimfire family!!

Regards, Dave.

The book "Longwalkers" was a very good volume on cougar hunting with hounds in western Canada and States south of there .
The weapon of choice for one of the houndsmen was a 22 mag revolver...........he had enough confidence in that round ....he for sure did not want a wounded cat in amongst his dogs.

Some guy comes on here and posts an obviously leading question about the lethality of small bore rifles and you guys give post after post of expert advice on which caliber to use and which fire arm would be more effective in a given situation. This despite the fact that the poster failed to define 'in self defense' or the would be assailant (man or beast). Man alive, you just gave the Canadian anti-gun lobby all the info that they will ever need.

I'm sure the anti's have grown bored collecting all the data from CGN, to further their cause! What a field day this site must be for them.
Worse things have been said, and even worser things to follow.

If a person wanted to use a 22WMR as a survival gun what bullet would be best for animals the size of a small to medium deer? Most of the bullets seem to be designed for small bodied varmints and open up really quickly. On the other hand, the fmj bullets don't mushroom much at all. I tried the fmj rounds out on a stack of 2 x 4 blocks, the penetrated almost four blocks and expand at most 50 percent and no fragmenting. So would the fmj be a better choice for deer size game than a varmint type bullet?

If you use a Rimfire for Self Defence, and aggressor has a firearm, you may get shot after you shoot him...

Are we still talking the proverbial "high on Crystal met zombie" or regular human beings? If it is the latter, i respectfully disagree.

There are some pictures of accidental 22 gunshot wounds on the internet. They may change your mind. There was also an old surveillance footage of a convince store clerk being shot in the abdomen with a 22 handgun. Worth seeing, for obvious impact power. after all, human beings are not the toughest animals around.
