what an absolutely crazy deer season I've just had..... I'm still a little bewildered LOL
after yesterday's morning buck my wife was all fired up. She hadn't even bought her license for the season yet as she has been way to busy.
So yesterday afternoon we made the drive into town to the Donex/Screamin Reel and she grabbed her license and a mulie tag even though I'm leaving in 5 days for my moose trip, the day any buck mulie closes. I didn't argue LOL
So this morning, up at 5:30..... I really wanted to sleep in but forced myself up.
Out the door at 6:30 and parked on the road in by 7 waiting for enough light to see 100 yards.
We drove up to a clearing 4k in , right near where my blind is and sat on the clearing for an hour. There was a skiff of the first snow of the season and I saw very little sign until we got near 4K. As the morning broke, my wife was nagging me to drive LOL She wanted to go down by blind 2 but i kinda wanted to focus on the 2 to 4k area. So we compromised, I'd drive back to 2K above the ranch fields and sit for 20 minutes and then head back in and see what we see.
We crept along the rough road looking for tracks on the sides and saw nothing. As I pulled up to the spot i like to sit to watch the area between crown land and the ranch fields, I was looking straight at a deer down off the road. It stayed calm and put it's head down and I saw 5 or 6 inch long spikes..... a buck. I was actually in total disbelief..... what are the odds? Then I caught more movement as I realized there were at least 8 animals grazing within 50 yards of the truck. All does and that spiker..... my wife wanted to take it so she got out and came around the back to my side of the truck. I got out and grabbed the 7mm mag and loaded it for her and stepped back just behind her as she knelt and lined up on the spike buck. Just then we caught movement between us and the spiker as a 2pt stepped out from behind a larger fir. I heard the wife curse LOL and then the gun went off with a crack that made me jump a little.
The 2pt lurched and wobbled and tried to make for the field but piled up after 10 yards. It was a text book shot at about 30 yards. Another fairly easy retrieval and that's it..... we are done for deer for this season...... unless she bugs me to take her after a whitetail in the last 2 weeks of november
