Potentially stupid question, but can .22lr be fired from a rifle chambered for .22WMR? I assume Hornet isn't "backward compatible" with .22lr.

Trying to decide which one to get, leaning towards stainless, synth .22lr 77/22.

No, sorry. A 22Lr in a magnum wouldn't be a smart idea. Same with a hornet in a 22 magnum chamber, don't do it. Ruger stainless synthetic is a great looking rifle.

Lol, I would highly reccomend the CZ 452 style (nickle plated which looks like stainless and synthetic stock). Most likely more accurate, cheaper, and they dont have that Ruger symbol on the stock (I dont like them).

This was my first .22 and is definately one of my favs.

On a side note...

The 77/22/22wmr/17hm2/17hmr all have the same receiver and bolt. The only distinguishing difference between them is the trigger guard/base plate length (22lr&17hm2 have a longer guard, 22wmr&17hmr have a shorter guard to accommodate the longer magazine).

Should you have both trigger guards you can put any of the above barrels on. All 77/XX stocks are compatible with any version.

Unlike the 10/22 where you can't simply buy shorter trigger groups, this rifle converts with relative ease.

I'm suprised - a 22 mag and 17HMR rim is larger than a .22 LR (.271 - .291). I got rid of my 77/22 so can't check but most modern 22's have bolts countersunk for the rim and I would have thought the extractor would be slightly different.

I have an older 77/22 and bolt face is recessed and tight-fitting with a 22LR rim, there is no way the mag case rim will fit, and I was told that the 77/22mag and 77/22 take the same stock so I bought a Volquartsen laminated stock for my 77/22 and it dosent fit, there is almost 1/8" gap around both the action, and the triggergaurd, and the bolts arent long enough either. As I said, mine is older (13 yrs I think) maybe they have changed and are now all the same, but mine isnt.

The 77/22 has a two piece bolt - so I guess you could say that the bolts are the same, with different front sections.

I just fired a .22 LR in a .22 mag.
Was trying out a bunch of .22's bought at the auction. The Ithica 49 is marked .22 LR but it appears that someone has rechambered it to .22 Mag.
The case didn't split but bulged severly and had to be pushd out with a rod.
