Anybody know what the largest cougar shot is? A local cougar hunter just bagged one that weighed in at 230 pounds, after it killed 2 of his hounds. I had no idea they could get that big.

Cougars very rarely kill hounds--no matter how big. 230 lbs is huge for sure. I recently saw a 140lber--3 Walker dogs caught it on the ground--fight lasted about 10 seconds. Snow too deep to catch the dogs quickly--poor kitty.

Jezuz - a 230 lb cat ?!? That's a big cat.

I've heard they can go to 250, so it may not be a world record, but gad it's up there.

I will try and get some pics over the weekend and some more details. I know for sure that these were very experienced hounds and a very experienced hunter - must of been one NASTY cat for sure.

When I was quite young, we had a cougar kill our pet hound and drag him under the crawl space of our house to dine on him there. One of my uncles shot him there and pulled out the whole mess. I was some impressed! IIRC, that was a very large Tom. My uncle weighed him at just over 200 lbs.

There's a lot of cougars around here but it appears they're not as big as they are on the mainland. Talking to the COs (who do the mandatory inspections) they firure 150 lbs is a big one in this area..

As SALTY says, there are a lot of small cougars on the Island. They seem to share a piss poor attitude. (probably related to "small man syndrome") I don't remember the exact numbers, but somewhere around 1/2 of the cougar vs human attacks in BC, are on the island. I've seen 6 cougars in the bush. 5 on Vancouver Island and the 6th, and by far the biggest, was near Princeton.

You got that right bud. Its been quiet around here for close to a couple years but for the previous 6 or 7 years there was at least one serious attack per year within 50 kms of where I sit! A couple of these folks were very lucky to be alive..
