234 Wildcat Family....ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Johnn, it is the one caliber I have chosen to hate..............I do not now, nor have I ever, owned or shot a 270 of any flavor !!! It is a useless caliber and I will not support it or JOC or his writings. It does nothing better than a 6.5 or 7mm and should have been the 280 but for American hatred or metric calibers and cartridges.

:)Can't say I really 'hate' any calibre however there is one I have a serious dislike for. That dislike isn't based on the abilities or performance of the cartridge but on the:rolleyes: 'frilly' name fanfare it's received from some quarters. Can't say I'm a fan of JOC but by the same token, I have nothing really against him or his views either. If there is/was a gun writer/hunter that I did follow fairly closely it would be Elmer Keith. My avatar is a photo I took of him as I was preparing to leave after a day long visit with him at his home in Salmon Idaho during the mis 70's. His experience in the field on game and his contribution to handguns, rifles and shotguns were quite noteworthy
;)Back to the .270 Win, after purchasing the Husqvarna in 358NM from Ted, I got to thinking. While still able to make use of it, there is one of the more popular I had not had so I thought I'd best fill that void. A .270 Win. Ted happened to have a Husqvarna available in 270, so I purchased another rifle. Punched a bit of paper with it to date but will try to give it some 'exercise' on our giant island Deer this fall.

Be happy to find some thing better than 223 . Something close to 260 in lighter bullets, say 25.06 in shorter case .

That would be called a 257 Roberts or 250 Savage, wouldn't it? Or if you want full blown 25-06 ballistics in a short action/short case the 25-284 comes to mind, an excellent 1/4 bore that will do anything the 25-06 will do and in a short action (except be able to buy ammo at your nearest outlet)

While I always thought the wssm cartridges were silly, the shortest cased 25-06 performing cartridge was the 25 wssm.

Maybe a 23 WSSM should be on the list. :)

Never done a BLR 'Looky but I would hazard a guess around 450-500 bucks.

So for us less technologically skilled people....an X-bolt in .243 might also be converted to .23 -.243 for similar kind of money? Depending of course on finding someone interested in doing the work.

And what caliber would be the donor for a .23 - 250?

Chasing pictures through my head of a BAR in one of the new .23 -? calibers as well.

If I can find an interested gunsmith I can see my bank account taking a hit...lol
Regards,
Dave

In all cases, you will need a .234 calibre BARREL............regardless of the chamber dimensions.

Doug

So I put what limited skills I actually do possess to work and re-surveyed this entire thread and compiled the following list of Doug's suggested names for calibers.

.23 x 6.5 will be the .234 Penguin

.23 x .204 will be the .234 Pipsqueak

.23 x .243 will be the .234 Raptor

.23 x .250 will be the .234 Koala

.23 x .284 will be the .234 Panda or Baboon

.23 x 06 no name suggested

.23 WSM no name suggested

Theses are the names as suggested by c-fbmi....Doug. I am not suggesting these are final or anything, I just thought that I would collect them so everyone is sort of on the same page.

I just ordered two more barreled actions in 6.5x55 from T.E.C. a couple of days ago. If you need one Doug I would be happy to donate it.

Dave

Thanks Doug. I do understand the need for the .234 calibre barrel but I was wondering what parent calibre action would be needed. As I have mentioned a few times, while I am enthusiastic about the project, I do not possess the tech skills to follow some of your conversations ie. shoulder slopes or progressive twist rifling.

I apologize if my questions come across as stupid. I guess it best if I remain an interested observer.
Regards,
Dave.

This idea crossed my mind as the BLR did.
I was told of a BAR in 25-06.
My sniffer is working on this one.

Sorry Dave, this is Doug, not Douglas the inventor of these interesting cartridges. It was when you asked what calibre would be a donor that I made that reply about .234 calibre....

And you probably know at least as much as I do about this stuff, all of which resembles black magic to this cartridge junkie.............

That is just wrong... the best looking of the bunch CANNOT be called the "koala..."

If you are going to stick with the wildlife theme, then I personally think it needs a "cat" name of some sort... obviously a Canadian cat... something like puma, catamount, cougar, lynx, bobcat etc... some thing slinky and cool...?

I was staying out of this, but you are so right. And of the cats you suggest, a lynx would be my hands down choice, as it represents northern Canada better than any of the others.
From the earliest Hudson's Bay posts in the north, the lynx was a principal fur, with its numbers governed completely by the rise and fall of the cycles of the snowshoe hare.
