for anyone interested , wholesale sports has the savage axis on sale , and I just found out as of august 1st savage is giving a 50.00 rebate until nov on the axis .

I know they aren't the most well liked rifles out there , but for under 300.00 , it makes for a pretty inexpensive toy to play with .

As for staying focused on this thread , I'm busy . Between 5 dogs, 84 chickens, a 3 month son, doing the siding on the house, and 2 old cummins that need wrenches applied , I figginnn busy ... So it's nice to find the odd moment to tune into one of my favorite threads every now and again

So me being...well....me...and somewhat OCD about doing this correctly, and possessing a failing memory, I went back and read through some of the previous posts to try and capture information so that I could bring it forward for reference purposes.

This way when I forget some info I won't have to scroll back through dozens of pages and people joining the thread will be able to get up to speed without reading through 100+ pages.

"..........any action that is used for a short .473 case head will work for almost all the 23s, the Pipsqueak needs the .375/222 case head but the rest will work on the .473 case head. I personally wouldn't use a 96 to make a Penguin, but it would certainly work. One must always keep in mind the working pressure of the 96 though and this would severely handicap the Penguin. If you pressure up the 96 action they tend to set the lugs, rendering the action worthless. The Penguin may benefit from a long or true medium action, but any rifle made for a 6.5X55 or 6mm Rem, or any of the X57 cases should be perfect. The same may apply to the Douglas, and anything based on the 2.5" +/- case will require a 30-06 length action. Not planning anything on the STW or RUM case so a true magnum length action should never be required."​

My first pick of the litter would be the one, without the 'D' but the 23 Moose or 234 Moose is a VERY close second.

with the 23 moose , could not one of the other reamers be used , lets say the 308 based reamer , and just run it deeper until it hits 30-06 depth ?
then the same thing could be done with the reamer for the reloading dies .
the shoulder would be different and more than likely pushed forward , but the extra cost of new reamer could be avoided .


just a thought.

I'm only saying this one last time, and I'll be done with this. If you are not changing the case diameters YOU DONT NEED ANOTHER F-EN REAMER... all you need is a 12$ bushing for the parent case. I.E> I switched my 6br bushing in the 6br sizing die to the appropriate size for the .23 and I was done. They seat with the parent seating die,

when you say bushing , what exactly are you meaning ?

is it the portion of the die that sizes the neck of the case in the die ? or is it something else ?

get a 243 bushing die, and just change the bushing and you will have the 230 Hyrax in about 15 seconds.
same applies for all but if you are starting with a 22 cal cartridge you need to expand first.

Forget about reducing from .30 it will need all kinds of neck turning afterwards.
