Another odd reload that came with the 8mm mauser.

A 236gr 0.323 bullet at a claimed velocity of 2400fps, which will run around 3000 ft lbs, the notes say "bear stopper"

Anyone ever see a bullet of this weight in 8mm?

The powder notes say "49gr (4831?)"

That sounds like the old RWS bullet. Exposed lead base with a cupro nickle jacket and a round nose with a huge lead tip, almost to the point of being at the bearing surface.

Very rapid expansion from what I remember.

They also made a FMJ that was around 215 grains for dangerous game.

Sounds right. Still have a few of those tucked away somewhere. - dan

I load my everyday round of 200gr, 236gr doesn't seem to be a far reach but the velocities seem off the mark..

A little more digging, they are not cupro nickel but a copper jacket, I think they are a Herters bullet, they are loaded in a Herters case.

Did herters make ammo back in the day? Wondering if this is actually factory stuff from way back.

Based on quick load they would be high pressure with any modern powder that is for sure.

I think they bought and rebranded ammo back in the day. - dan

Think the old Herter's company was like Ruko or old Tasco (Tanross Supply Company) - never made a thing themselves - just sold stuff that someone else made, and put their name on it. I think Cabela's now owns the Herter's brand name - I think they still do not make anything, themselves - just a brand name.

Yup, that's how I recollect it. - dan

I have a box of 8mm Herters 195 gr and a box of 8mm Barnes "Original" 250 gr.

I also have 7mm 195gr Barnes and 308 225gr Barnes. In the "old days", very heavy for caliber bullets were favoured. Nowadays there's been a move to higher velocities, and bullet construction that works well with that.

I wish I could just go shoot them and see what they are all about, but pretty darn sure they are reloads and not risking it at all, will just be added to the mixed primed cases loaded with start loads for messing around, may keep one together for the novelty of that huge round nose bullet.

Probably going to have a row of novelty 8x57 from this stash, from the RN FMJ 127gr to the 236gr SP RN and almost every weird bullet in between from the 50s through today.

I have a few loaded factory 236gr rounds. Has the data and load pressure, claimed velocity out of a 24" barrel i believe was 2360ish. It was German made, if i recall RWS but cant remember for sure. I'll have to double check and get back to you folks.

I will add that 236gr at 2400 fps is doable based off quickload data. I was looking at 250gr Woodleigh loads at 56,000 psi and they were nearing 2400 fps. 220grs could make 2550 fairly easy with our modern day powder selection.

Funny I ran this in quick load as well, above SAAMI spec but not crazy high.

I usually run quickload with actual data i get from my OAL of the cartridge and actual H2O case capacity with a 24 inch barrel. Reloader 17 was the powder that showed great promise.

Realguns.com also had good real world results and he didnt hit max 56,000 from what i see from quickload. 2568 fps with a 220 should really make a great big game round.

Nice, I got a few lbs of RL17 to try since I'm not even getting close to the claimed velocities with CFE223.
