hi their i bought a mossberg 500 turkey a while back and it has a 24 inch barrel. i would like to use the gun for waterfowl also but everyone says that the 24 ionch barrel isnt long enough. i dont really want to buy another barrel so is this true? thanx
 
The main thing about longer barrels is a better sighting plane and they swing better.

Use what you have and only then can YOU determine if you need a longer barrel. Probably not though.

I guess these people are your hunting buddies who don't want to be in the same blind as you are:rolleyes:

The shorter barrel will have a bigger blast. Uncomfortable for the people next to you.
 
try using a different choke first. Instead of modified, try full. It should still give a good pattern for fowl. Try patterning it at various distances to see if it will do. If you need a longer barrel, they're pretty cheap to buy anyway, I belive around $150 for a new one.
