Any thoughts on a 240gr in a 300 Win Mag?

Any guesses on how fast a 240 will go in front of a case full of H1000 or RL25 in a 26" brl? :D

Having read articles about the Woodleigh 30 cal 240gr RNSN it is well up to the most punishing work you can think of.
It was designed to help cull water buffalo in Australia's Northern Territory and proved an excellent choice in bolt guns and O/U doubles.
It is NOT suitable for 300 Win Mag as it was designed with the lower power of the '06 in mind.
Woodleigh also make an 8mm 250gr RNSN and this can be pushed to 2200fps.
I know.....I've loaded them.
If you can't do the same using the significantly larger case of the '06 you need to re-examine your load.
It should also be remembered that Woodleigh's approach is that bullets ALWAYS expand and that a lower velocity enabling a more controlled expansion is preferable to higher velocity.
An experienced hunter and Woodleigh rep I know of loads all of his buffalo rifles to between 2000fps and 2100fps with as heavy a bullet as possible.
He has found that often a 9.3x62 loaded with a 286gr pill at 2100fps will be more effective at flattening a buff than a 375 H&H punching out a 270gr pill at 2550fps.
The bullet stays together better and expands properly, not drastically all at once.
Moreover, the guy shooting the 9.3mm is able to KEEP shooting buffs all day.
The H&H shooter finds himself sore pretty soon.
Granted culling is not hunting but less recoil equals easier accurate shooting.
And these are not a long range bullet either......they're designed for close stalking

I suspect they kept the jacket thin to allow upset at 1900 fps and this might be the limiting factor with respect to .300 magnum velocities. As you say though, some testing is in order. Looking for a spring bear load?

Bonded core should mean that core/jacket separation is less likely but it won't have much effect on rate of expansion.

200 fps can make quite a difference in some bullets but it depends what you're gonna shoot at with it. For stuff that's mean and might take offense at I wouldn't go past the manufacturer's recommendation of 2400 fps. But if you're using it on moose/elk/deer i expect 2600 fps would work fairly well.

When I saw the title then the pic I immediately started thinking that I would like to give them a try in my 26" barreled 300RUM but I already load 200gr Accubonds & A-Frames -> 3200fps for it and see absolutely no reason to change.

I do have a 20" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 30-06 that I am looking for a load for I put this rifle together for heavy bush - 300 yard hunting so I'm thinking these would definitely be fun to try out especially when I get the ghost ring backup sights set up on it.

Nah forget it if I wanted a heavy RN bullet in my -06 I'd due to the low velocities just go with the much cheaper Hornady 220gr RN or just load up my 200gr A-Frames...

Actually it does due to the heat used in the bonding process bonded bullets do expand easier/quicker than standard core bullets.

If Mike is publishing that his 300 Win mag loads are doing 2600fps I should beable to push them to 2800fps in my 300RUM.

Maybe I should be thinking about these after all...

I thought it might be fun to play with them in the 300, especially since it's a single shot No1 and I can seat the bullet quite a ways out of the case. 200gr Barnes TTSX is my current load but I also have a few boxes of 200gr Accubonds. These 240's are just for fun, but might make a dandy load to slip in the chamber for hunting elk or bear at spitting distance
