Can anyone enlighten me about this caliber? I saw A Remingtion 700 in the caliber and I would like to buy it for coyotes and varmint. Is this A good choice for what I would like to do. Cheers

There is a section on 6mmbr that shows the difference between the 243 and the 243AI. Long story short the neck is tapered less so you can load it hotter. You can fire-form 243 brass and then get AI dies.

I never liked AI stuff cuz it does not feed from a stagger feed mag reliably and the custom dies. I would rather just move up a caliber if I needed more hitting power or velocity.

I think it would be ok for coyotes. But then again so is 243. The extra speed is just gravy.

I like them. It is a handloading proposition, generally speaking. You fireform the brass by firing factory 243 Win ammo in it, then reload the newly shaped cases. You don't gain a lot, my experience puts the 243 AI pretty much equal to the 6mm Rem. It will do pretty much anything you want it to do to varmints. FWIW - dan

The AI is a reloading only cartridge. Find out how much dies are worth first. Stateside, an RCBS die set runs $142.99US and are special order dies. Redding dies run $156.99US.
It'll certainly do what you want and do it well, but like dan belisle says, you don't gain much. Mind you, if the rifle is cheap enough(you might get a better price due to the chambering too), you could re-barrel it to .243 Win or the like. Likely be able to sell or trade the AI barrel.

On pg. 304 of P.O. Ackley's, Handbook for Shooters and Reloaders, you can find a cartridge description and load data. Coles notes version is that the Ackley version "was created by popular demand, not with the idea of improving on the original .243 Winchester which itself might be termed an "improved" cartridge.". That said there are velocity increases with the Ackley version- generally 200-300 fps.

Personally, I like the improved cartridges/firearms as long as they come with dies. I currently have two .303 Epps Imp., a .257 Epps Imp and a .22 K Hornet. They were all purchased used and came with dies.

You don't need to fire form with live rounds. There are a number of recipes for fire forming with new cases, small amounts of pistol powder, some filler (cream of wheat is one option) and a "plug" for the mouth of the cartridge. Saves a lot of money and doesn't require a trip to the range to fire form.

Maybe Lee has made some production runs of the 243AI. I have a set we got used in the U.S. I think it's about the right cap. for 6mm. Similar ballistics to the 6-284 with less heat. Mark

Love the 243 AI.
Whats wrong with a gain of 300fps? It sure helps down range when your tossing 107's or bigger....

blargon: you must have a problem with quality. I don't know the seller, but I have to appreciate the quality in that rifle. If I didn't have a custom in 243 I would be taking a serious look at this one. I see you(blargon) have a 22-250 for sale, are you getting comments like that about your rifle??????(There's an old saying about living in a glass house.)

I was just jabbing. He asked to be enlightened on the .243AI, but he already owned one...;)

Looks like a good one, but I have no interest in it...:)

(I added the razzy)
