243 as a Legitimate and Humane Deer Gun?

We should test this. I would pay money to watch.

I have the 50... Might I suggest Hornady's 750 grain AMAX?

My choice is .308.

That said, my brother-in-law who has shot far more deer than I ever will replaced his .308 with a .243 decades ago - and has nothing but good to say about it.

His opinion on such matters deserves a great deal of respect.

"Chuckle" ? ...that sure reminds me of somebody. :)

I've shot deer with:
12 ga buckshot
7.62x39 Russian
308 Win
7mm Rem Mag
Compound Bow
Excalibur Crossbow

Currently settled on the 308 Win... In comparison, my wife has shot all 5 of her deer with 243 Win. She thinks it is a GREAT deer cartridge, and I think she is right!

Cheers
Jay

Mate of mine dropped a deer this morning at 650 yards with his 338laoua
Through the boiler room and out of the shoulder
Deer did run a few yards before dropping
3inch sq exit wound with excessive meat damage

I was expecting to see more damage

I was referring to your "chuckle" comment it reminded me of sunray.

I believe he's a .50 beowulf guy rather than a .50 bmg.

Oh he's definitely a 50bmg guy, and he's used it to hunt too. With a good broadside shot where you miss the legs, you'll only lose some rib meat regardless of caliber. (i did a search to confirm he's used the 50 to hunt with, would have quoted a thread but it's locked)

I believe you have Jay’s patented “chuckle” confused with Sunrays patented “snicker” ;-P

That'd be an M2 Browning HMG. Comes with multiple variations of iron sights. 28"is the minimum barrel length according to Dan Lilja. Who just knows. Add the W's. .riflebarrels.com/articles/50calibre/lengths_velocity_50_bmg.htm
A 12 gauge coach gun is bigger in calibre than a .50 BMG. It's about .75 calibre. Costs less and is easier to shoot too. snicker.

Funny you brought that up, as I noticed it again by accident while digging up Otokiak’s narwhal hunting thread. Oh sunray. I almost miss him. Almost.

That's delightfully awesome.

I would believe that your wife is right! I've shot deer with:
12 gauge 00 buck (both the regular stuff and the low-recoil crap)
.243 (two of my finest deer fell to the .243)
.308
.30-06
.300 WM
.338 RUM
9MM

The only ones that sucked at the task were the low-recoil 00 buck and the 9mm (and those were on wounded deer no less). The rest were DRT.

Hmm when i was using my 243 in the past it dropped big bucks like the hammer of thor.

Only thing was I bought the gun when i was young and it was a long bull barrel target style gun that got in the way when walking in tight bush or trail , kept hitting the barrel on branches and stuff.

If i had bought a 243 in a BLR or something more compact I would probably still be using it , ended up on a good deal on a 308 and nabbed it. the 308 definitely has greater felt recoil.

Both shoot well but the 243 was even more accurate than my 308 and flatter shooting out too a point.

Last deer i shot with my 243 made one surprised leap and fell right down , double lung heart shot. , last deer i shot with my 308 ran 25 or so yards and fell down , double lung and clipped the heart.

both work well same results similar exit holes too.

I've shot deer with

.243
.257 Rob
30-30
30-06
300winmag
9.3x57
458winmag
6.5x55
8x57
45-70
38-55
..and maybe 1-2 more I'm forgetting.

I don't believe there was a great difference in the "drop time" between the different cartridges when the bullets were placed in the boiler room. They tended to go down in a few steps or immediately. One whitetail got 70 yds before dropping with a high lung shot from a 180gr 300winmag. The bullet placement was the difference, not the velocity or the weight/diameter of the bullet.

I made a "Reverse Texas Heart Shot" once with the 300 Win. Managed to almost miss all the vital even though it was shot center front chest, bullet went over the heart, mostly between the lungs, and caught a piece of the liver before continuing through the abdomen and exiting under the tail. That one made it about 100 yds.
