Just curios who sis using a .243 for deer hunting and the performance of the 100gr core lokts.
I am looking to have a coyote rig that can be used as a back up deer rifle........ any opinions would be appreciated.
thanks

You have picked the right caliber then. The 243 is absolute death on coyotes with any weight of bullet, and when you step up to the heftier weights it is a great deer cartridge too. I have taken whitetails, mulies and two elk with my 243 and I love it. Great plinking caliber as well. Im thinking about picking up a model seven CDL in 243 to compliment my current 700 classic.

Edit: I do not have any expirience with the corelokt bullets.

My father uses a Rem 7400 .243 for deer and loves it. So far all the deer he has gotten with it were one shot kills. I think as long as the shooter does his (or her) part the .243 makes a fine deer rifle. In fact I just picked up a Rem 700 .243 from a fellow gunnut to use as my caribou rifle.

243

Have hunted deer almost exclusively with a blr .243 from the time I was 16 until about 44 when my son laid claim to it. Don't know how many deer and antelope, but lots, at least 2/yr, sometimes more.
Early yrs. used mostly 87gr, tried up to 110gr. I believe now nosler makes a partition around 90gr. That'd be my bullet choice for deer.
Nearly all of my successful hunts were one shot, drop on the spot. A .243 is fast, flat, and very accurate.
Only once I had an animal run, a running antelope, aimed just behind the shoulder; when the bullet landed it's leg was back, and hit it in the bone just below the shoulder joint(shot a couple inches further fwd than intended). Broke the leg, but did not penetrate the chest. Luckily last shot in the clip did the job, but taught me a .243 lesson: chest good, neck good, shoulder bad.
If you go with the .243 I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

For Deer?

Just spend 10$ more and choose the Core-Lokt Ultra bonded bullet 100gr. I have read a good report on this tough little bullet.

The bonded process prevent core separation wich will probably happens on a bone with a 3000fps 100gr regular bullet.

If you reload some Barnes and Nosler partition are a good choice for deer.
