Put the bullet through the lungs and it will work. I wouldn't be hunting with a small rifle just for the challenge, though. I assume "challenge" means the need to put the bullet behind the shoulder on a broadside shot or else don't shoot? If that's your intent, then that's A-OK. But I wouldn't be taking any raking or lengthwise shots with that bullet/cartridge combo. I would also try to stay out of the shoulder bone.

Hunting is more about humane kills than personal ego boosting challenges. I'd say no way is it big enough to safely kill a moose in most cases. Sure a .22 can kill one if you are skilled or lucky enough. Ask yourself if you are either.......................

i'm sure it will do the job with proper shot placement.

i've hunted deer and coyotes with the 243 and think this is the area where it belongs. and the winchester website recommends this as well.

it will work with excellent shot placement. if you have a .300wsm to use and you choose to take a .243 for moose, I might hazard a guess you suffer from mild metal retardation?

If your confident you can wait for a good shot, and pass up a bad shot without having to even think about it ,the descision is yours whether the 243 would be enough for the job.

That being said I use a 25-06 for moose, and would take any of these three shots, providing I had a tag.

I wouldn't take this shot.

I shot a moose at about 10 yards that was walking towards me. looked a bit like your last picture. I used a 338WinMAg. Bullet glanced off the sternum and ran down the outside of the rib cage.

My buddy said i should have shot it between the eyes.

Anyway, power is not everything. It is not much of anything. Once you are over a certain power (say 30-30) it is 99% shot placement.

I own a couple 243s. I would rather buy a 260Rem than a 243, even though they seem similar. A 260 with a 140 to 160 gr bullet would be perfect for moose.

it's been said before a 1000 times.

just becasue you can do soemthing doesn't mean you should.

if all you had was a 243 i'd say go nuts have fun be careful. but if you have a 300 use it!
that's just my opinion. I'd rather have a little extra meat wasted and know that the animal didn't suffer. If i don't think i can kill it with one shot, i dont' take the shot. if you apply teh same pricipal with your 243 I think you'd be ok... but why would you bother taking the chance?

ymmv

Here we go again! Why would one choose a .243 for a moose hunt unless he/she absolutely had to. I remember a bull a friend shot years ago in Manitoba...when we actually had a decent moose population here...and it had a bunch 22 rimfire slugs and bullet holes through the rack. Sooo, I guess a moose can be shot at with almost any firearm...

I agree 100%. Yes, it can be done with EXCELLENT shot placement, but I don't agree with using a .243 for a moose when you've got a perfectly good 300. The .243 for moose is bordering [maybe crossing] the unethical boundary. If you have no other firearm, then, maybe... but you'd better be D@MN good.
If you've got something better, USE IT! :bangHead:

Here's another vote for : It will kill a moose with excellent shot placement, but why?
If you have a heavier option to use, that would be better. If I had only one rifle and it was a 243/6mm, I would have it loaded with a premium bullet, and I would not take any shot unless the presentation was perfect. Eagleye.

I just don't really understand your dilemma. Why the heck would you even consider a 243 if you've got a 300WSM? What's with the "looking for a challenge" thing anyways? Do you live in an area where moose are so plentiful that finding a good animal or calling one in is not challenge enough? Why would you even consider a "marginal" caliber(at best) when you have an ideal calibered gun in your possession?
As the 243 as a moose caliber, well as previously stated, yes it could be used but you better be sure of your shot. I would personally say that 270 would be a minimum.
Just my opinion.

I have shot a couple of moose with a .243. Broadside shots- one using 105 grain Speer round nose bullet and the other a 95 grain Partition... the 105 was recovered from a moose 3 of us shot at the same time...guessed at 300 yards... two of us hit it... both killing shots in the chest... my 243 and a 7mm Mag. The 243 bullet was bent with a big ding in the tip and inside the hide on the far side...

I agree with everyone. The real question is not "can it be done?" but, "why would you, unless you have to?" You don't have to so don't.

I really oppose the whole thing of using a small caliber "for the challenge". Living things should not be killed as stunts to prove something. I thought that whole idea died in the early 60's.
