.243 Headspace Gauges Where can I buy

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for a barrel swap of my Stevens 200 since I'm trying to do a custom built with a Match grade barrel. I can't find where I can buy the headspace Gauge for a .243 and also looking for the barrel lock nut tool. Do you guys know where I can buy those tools in canada if possible ?

Also, is the headspace gauge for a .243 is the same as the .308 ?

what barrel are you installing.. It is best if you can get the headspace gauge from the same manufacturer as the reamer.. I know Shilen uses Pacific Tool and Gauge reamers so that was were I bought my headspace gauges for my 260AI.

For my 338 Lapua Imp I bought dies from ATRS and a reamer and headspace from Manson Reamers.. All a matched set.

This is more important if you are running an improved case as small variations in case design do exist.

Do a search for either of these sites and they have an interchangeability chart to tell you which ones you can you. I believe the 243, 260, 7-08, 308 and 338 federal are all interchangeable.

I'm looking at bying a Shilen barrel from Mysticplayer. So from what you are saying, I should buy a headspace gauge from Pacific Tools ?

Steel head space gauges are made to an exact standard. It should not matter who made them.

Head space is best set to a standard. It is easily repeatable by anyone anywhere. Brass can vary tremendously.

Many shooters do however adjust the headspace when fitting a barrel to a custom size that has no standard.
 
Crash2K, I've done exactly what you are planning.

I took a Stevens 200 in .243 and added a heavy match barrel from Mysticplayer. I did the head spacing with fired brass from the factory barrel so all my neck-sized brass would be a good fit. I made my own barrel nut wrench and barrel vice... it's nice having access to CNC equipment at work:) After the barrel swap I also added a new trigger from Sharp Shooter Supply.

The whole thing sits in a new thumb-hole stock that I carved from from a nice piece of walnut. The whole process was very rewarding, especially the carving, and the finished gun shoots loonie size groups at 200m.

I expect your going to have a good time with this project. Take your time and enjoy the process!

OK Warrenb, here are some pictures... I hope. This is my first attempt at posting a picture so we'll see if works.

Crash2k, What are you planning to do for a stock? I've seen some pictures here on CGN of factory Stevens stocks that have been reworked and reinforced. They looked pretty nice.
