Is this possible? I'm thinking yes, as .308 works fine in an M1 and a .243 is just a necked-down .308 that basically has the same overall lenght. But I'm not 100% sure...
This will probably work just fine, but you might find getting the barrel done a little difficult... ...there was a thread on 22-250 Garand in Milurp section the past couple of days that you may find useful.

finding a barrel will be difficult and getting someone to build one will be expensive. I have a springfield M1A in .243 win. and it shoots sub moa with hand loads. If the barrel is worn out reaming it out to a larger caliber might be an option.
I'll toss the idea of rem 260 if the 243 is worn. I asked a reputable rebore service to take a Garand to 366, but 35 whelan was as far as they were willing to go.

Gas port issue is very true; however, variable port gas cylinder locks screws can be your friend.
Start big and tighten things up. When you get to no port and it doesn't cycle, then things get bit more interesting.
