I am considering getting a small Caliber rifle for coyte hunting and for just some fun at the range without blowing out my shoulder. What do you guys think would be the better Caliber.

Both calibers work great for turning coyotes into natures buffet bird food, so there's not really a wrong answer. Do you find the recoil of a 243 too much? I think it's only around 10-11 ft lbs, so not that high in the big scheme of things.

No that's why I'm looking at either one. I own many high Caliber rifles just want a fun plinker. And something for my boys to learn on when they are old enough as well

243 is ok but factory rifle options really limit bullet selections. 6mm Creedmoor is basically the same but way more bullet options especially if you take longer shots.
LOTS of bullet options for a 243win with a 10 twist. Can they shoot the >100gr bullets? Usually no, but those bullets are hardly necessary for someone looking to kill coyotes and paper.

243win is a decent step up from a 22lr. It is the one reason I wish I had a 223 in my collection, right now I'm dealing with messing around with light loads for my 243win for the kiddos, whereas I could just use normal loads in a 223. Or 22-250 for that matter.

Awesome thank you

I'm a fan of the 22-250. Used to kill southern ontario gophers with one, out to 500m.

They shoot flat, but handloading used to be the only way to get really good repeatable accuracy. I couldn't say what factory ammo is like these days.

The nice thing of the 243 is that it is a short bolt throw and can be quick for follow up shots.

The other thing you didn't talk about was platform. Some companies don't make good guns, in either caliber lol.

For a fun plinker at the range, teaching kids and adding in coyote hunting I would go with a .223. Cheaper to shoot, no recoil and longer barrel life compared to the .22-250 of .243. If deer size game might be considered in the future go with a .243.
