I have a young friend,(20) that wants a long range coyote rifle. I have set up for reloadinf both. I use a 243 and have shot coyotes at distance. I have shot a whittail at too far with a 25-06 as well. The 25 eats more meat & hide than the 243. ANY ideas from thouse who know? thanks all. AJ::)

I have both! I love the 25-06 as my hunting rifle. I have shot moose deer elk coyotes and a pile of gophers with both. The 25-06 is much more versatile as it can shoot bigger bullets faster. I use barnes tsx for everything. They don't eat much fur unless they hit shoulder. The 243 has been a bit fussy to load for while the 25 eats nearly any load and I have 2 of them....you won't be sorry if you chose the 25-06>

If he is just looking for a coyote rifle then I suggest the .243 for it's lower recoil and better selection of factory ammo. If he wants to hunt deer and coyotes then I vote for the .25-06. Either choice is a good one.

Go with the .243.

The simple reason is the selection of projectiles for reloading. After all it uses the 6mm and its an awfully popular round for long distance shooter.

There are so many different types of bullets out there and you can always find them.

Six of this, half dozen of the other. He needs to decide if he wants a long action or short. Mind you, if he gets off hunting and finds he's left his ammo on the kitchen table, the .243 will be easier to find in small places.
"...eats more meat & hide than..." Depends on the bullet. If he plans on keeping the hides, there are fmj's made for this purpose in .243 and more match grade bullets than for a .25-06. Both have a fairly wide assortment of deer sized game bullets.

I have both and there probably isn't a right or wrong. I would buy the 06 though just so you could use it for more larger game purposes. I would not be scared to take an elk with it but the 243 probably is a little light for that. I shoot the 06 with a 90gr bullet with reloader 19 and it is an awsome coyote round but is a bit devistating on the hide but out of my a-bolt it is in that 1/2 moa range so I am happy with that. My 2 Cents

I dont have a 25-06 but do have many 6.5mm , and a 243.
I have seen the 243 work very well not in my hands but in cousins and uncles, clean quick kills from what I have seen.
I am taking my 700 243 this year for whitetails out of the stand.

Why not a 223WSM, 22/250?

Of the two you suggested, if just for 'yote I'd go with the .243, for sure. If he wants something to double as a deer rifle, then the 25-06 gets my vote!

I suggest a dedicated long range varmint (read: heavy barrel) rifle for coyote and other small predator hunting (like lynx bobcat and wolverine). A smaller bullet does a lot less damage to the pelts, has lower recoil, and often cost less.

Consider:

.17 Remington Fireball
.22 Hornet
.220 Swift
.223 Remington
.22-250 Remington
.204 Ruger

Or if you dare .223 WSSM

Savage Arms makes some really cool varmint guns at a price anyone can afford. Remington varmint guns are incredible but almost twice as much as savage. Bowning’s varmint guns are limited; better off with a Remington at this price point. If money is not a factor look at the Kimber 84M Pro Varmint or LongMaster VT. The CZ 527 VARMINT LAMINATED is a very cool gun as well.

If you are going to kill a predator please do it the honor of taking its pelt. (my 2 cents only)

Why not list every small caliber ever made :jerkit: The thread is asking 243 or 25-06 because he has the loading crap already in his reloading room.
