.243--tell me about your rifle!

Bought a lightly used Sako m75 SS 243 in May and mounted a Leupold VX2 4-12x40AO LR duplex scope. This rifle shoots factory Federal 80gr at under 1" @ 100 metres. This rifle will be my coyote / wolf gun this winter. Haven't reloaded for it yet-no time, but got good selection of bullets and powder to try ( 55/95 grain BST, 65grain moly Vmaxs) cant wait to get going on this one. I mainly use my Sako m75SS 300WM for all my big Game, but have used my T3 LS 270WSM a few times since 2004-sweet rifle this one is with 140gr Accubonds.
 
As has been said above, the 243 can be used and will work but is not ideal. I personally prefer to hit deer with a heavier bullet of larger bore size. Certainly would work if it was the only thing at hand, and is a great candidate for using premium bullets like the 100gr Grand slam and 85/95gr Barnes.
 
thanks all for the good replies, but i guess i don't need one now!...my wife died 2 nights ago after a long illness....i;m deep the fog right now, hunting and shooting just don't seem that important at the moment.:confused: ..you guys take care...larry

I have a .243 Winchester Model 70 mini carbine with a wood stock and I shoot Winchester or Federal 100 grain bullets.

RUGER 77 in the lightweight barrell 90 NOSLER partition good on deer will break a shoulder and tear up enough organs not to need a blood trail and a 55 Sierra FMJ boat tail will take coyotes out as far as it's safe in eastern Ontario just be sure your not skylining, never wanted to shoot a bear, but am sure that at the ranges I've seen them at the deer load would be more than adequet

So where do they sell these 117 gr hornady's? I have a 243 and the 85gr barnes or the 95 gr nosler partition get my vote. The 243 is more then enough gun for deer, unless you can't hit the target.
 
I used to own a Remington Model 788 in .243 Win. This was the gun my Dad used for deer hunting. He was in his 70's when he last hunted, and recoil was an issue so he loved the .243 and the light rifle it was chambered in. He killed a truckload of deer with that gun, all with one shot at ranges from 50 to 200 yards.

Alot of guys will shun the .243 because it's just not "manly" enough; after all, if it doesn't belt you, it isn't worth shooting, right? However, it's prime virtue is its "user-friendlieness." Because of its lack of recoil and excellent accuracy, most people tend to shoot this caliber much better than a heavier recoiling one, and confidence and shot placement are what it's all about.

I would definitely recommend premium bullets in this caliber when shooting deer-sized game. I've personally seen several deer shot with Nosler Partitions in this calibre, and each one was a one-shot kill with exit holes you could stick your fist in.

Nothing wrong with the .243, that is for sure!
