243 vs 270 for hunting

270 is king! But hey I'm in the same boat as you here in SW Ontario. I will toss is a curve for you...look @ 6.5 creedmoor it will do both well. The 243 is a great varmint round and perfect for yotes and wolves, but Northern bucks...no way. My 2 cents

its actually Very reasonable approach! although to split the Difference beautifully , the 260 Remington is His Man!
purrrfect

depends on co.. theres a new one in southern ontario you would not like to run into.. hes very keen on giving fines and laying charges..."A person hunting small game shall not carry or use a rifle of greater calibre than the rifle known as a .275-calibre rifle, except a muzzle-loading rifle, in the geographic areas described in Schedule 4 to Part 8 of Ontario Regulation 663/98 (Area Descriptions) made under the Act." so 270 (.277 caliber)i dont think so....ive got two friends going through this right now...they were hunting coyotes.Check the townships you intend to hunt is the safest bet and try to get names or in writing of who you spoke to..

"The rifle known as 275-caliber rifle"... The 270 is known as a 270, and 270 is less than 275.

My understanding is its based on nominal caliber, not actual caliber. By being known as a 270 and not a 277, its legal.

This 100%. It's ways been based on bore diameter which is .270

The CO will look at the barrel stamp, box of cartridges/head stamp and look for
270 or smaller.

There isn't a single CO out there walking around with a bullet puller and vernier looking for .277 projectiles when the MNR has said the 270 win is legal.

Shoot moose with a .243? Hilarious. I would get laughed out of hunt camp so fast......
.270 is too much for coyotes, .243 is too light for moose. Think you are missing something here.....but it’s pretty obvious, you need two rifles, one for deer & moose, one for coyotes.
IMHO, I would employ the tried & true Remington .223 in a bolt gun like the Savage Axis for coyotes. .270 might be adequate for moose calfs, but bulls require something better.....

Lol ok then.

I cant tell if this is supposed to be a joke because it sounds like one... plenty of bulls taken with a 150 grain bullet from a 308 win and even 30-30, 303 bit or 300 savage. A 270 win with a 150 grain partition has more power and better SD for penetration not to mention a flatter trajectory and down range energy.

This. Not the 243. LOL.

I have shot and seen lots of deer shot with 270's (130's)
Seen a few moose shot with them too...(moved up to 140's)
Switched over to 308 (150's) for a while and finally decided o go with 260REM. (120's)

All of them will do the job if you shoot where you are supposed to

If you are serious about what you just said then the 270 would be the right choice, use 110 gr ttsx for coyotes and same load for deer. 140's and 150's for moose. Problem solved.

I have a 300 win mag bar safari. It was my big game gun.

Judging by the responses from this thread there both great proven classic rounds with a strong following.

243 has more energy greater range the the 30-30. 243 should be good for deer.

A BAR in 243 would be very nice .... but its not a firearm I would want to take out into heavy rain... and the short two week season for whitetail will invariably present some days when the conditions are miserable but the hunting can be very productive. I think a 243, synthetic stock, bolt action would be a good choice ... plus a 243 bolt gun in a short action is lighter and handles a little faster (IMO) than a 270W long action. 270W and 243W are both excellent.

What about the Browning BAR Mk 3 Stalker in 243? Synthetic/composite stalk I think would be good in foul weather.
