Before you take the plunge, why not go and get a box of Remington's "Reduced Recoil" .308's and let him try a few out of one your .308's ??? These rounds have recoil typically (according to Remi gton's data) a little less than the .243 with 100 grainer's, and should give you/him an idea of what to expect.
I too like the idea of a .260 Remington ( the new Model 7 CDL is a great looking little rifle ! ) as a youngster's first rifle. And if you reload anyways, there should be no problem.
