What is a commonly used 243 Load ? anything common like the old 270 win H4831 with 130 gr. Bullet load made famous by Jack O'Connor ?

Im thinking of a Deer hunting load (80-100 gr. bullets) ?

edit: user the Ruger compact model (M77 Hawkeye)

you got it!
243, 100 grain bullets, 4x grains of H4831.
Pm me and I will give you the code for the "x."

- forget the 80 grain bullets for deer. All of .243 80 grain the non-premium bullets are varmint bullets and will not be reliable deer killers.

Myself and my 2 daughters all use 243's for deer. We use 95 Gr nosler partitions, and 41.5 grains of IMR 4831. We've had very good success and accuracy on both Mule deer, and Whitetail.

I used to use 95gr Nosler BT pushed by 45gr of IMR 7828.

They worked great on White-tailed deer, Antelope & Coyotes..... Not so great on Mulies. Don't get me wrong, they worked on mulies, just not as well.

I've since moved on to a 30 cal for all my Big Game hunting.

Cheers!

What is so special about the Mulies ?

They can get a bit larger than White tailed deer.

A full grown Mature Mulie Buck will dress out about 100lbs heavier than a comparable White tail.

They do tend to stand still longer than WT deer, so in that regard they are a bit easier to shoot.

I once shot a Mulie buck 4 times in the neck with my .243...... Still walking after that. All 4 rounds went right through, no expansion (like someone put a steel rod through it's neck) My hunting partner finished it off with a .270.

I bought a 30-06 before the next hunting season. I had the opertunity to take another Mulie buck with my -06, DRT I belive is the term.

Cheers!

Has anybody here reloaded for the Ruger compact in 243 ? if so do you find that the faster powders were better for the 16.5" barrel ? Im still in the testing phase with the 100gr. bullets I have.....I may also look towards the 85 variety . I had the wife shooting it on saturday....so far so good

Im just going to start loading for the 243win as well. I was hoping to shoot the 95gr SMK's but I cant seem to find them. Might have to look at the 90gr FMJBT Gamekings instead.

H1000 seems to be popular powder wise. Think I'll give that a go.

I had the 243 out yesterday...fairly erratic results (my chrony may of been disliking the weather too) with RL-22 and 100 gr. bullets.....Mind you it was -20C and RL-22 is not the most stable powder out there....loading up H4831 next.....also contemplating some faster powder too.
