243 win vs 270 win

I have both and would pick the .270 over the .243 anytime.

Recoil? .270?? Pshaw!

It is noticeable 243 between 7-=11 vs 16.5-17 recoil energy, first list is rifle weight

243 Win. (75 at 3400) 8.5 7.2 7.4
.243 Win. (95 at 3100) 7.25 11.0 9.9
.243 Win. (100 at 2960) 7.5 8.8 8.7

270 Win. (130 at 3140) 8.0 16.5 n/a
.270 Win. (140 at 3000) 8.0 17.1 11.7
.270 Win. (150 at 2900) 8.0 17.0 11.7

Trajectory wise they're pretty equal. Zero at 200m, drop at 400 is 22.1" for the 243 and 20" for the 270.

Energy wise, the 243 drops under 1000ftlbs around 340yds, whereas the 270 has 1000+ at 500.

Considering most people can't shoot beyond 300m accurately from field positions anyways, there isn't a huge difference between the two. My primary rifle is a 270. I have a 243 but haven't hunted with it yet (it's got a blind mag and I hate those for hunting. It was bought primarily as a lower recoil alternative to the 270 for range use and for that purpose I am OK with a blind mag.)

OP both will work on deer just fine. The 270 is better suited for larger stuff than the 243, but within 300yds both are great deer cartridges. My buddy in a wheelchair shoots a 243, and he never has issues with it under performing.

My 243 feels almost like 22lr after 20 rounds of 270 from the bench. Everyone I've had try it (most my friends shoot 3006 or similar) have been amazed at how gentle it is.

If you are just going to use it for deer .. take the 243W .... it can be had in a much lighter, handier rifle and that will let you cover more ground in a day -- which will improve your odds of bringing home a deer. You can get a 308 in a lighter rifle of course --- but the lower recoil with 243 will offer easier to achieve accuracy

Ok thanks guys, I think I’ll be keeping the 243. Like others said, later on if I want to hunt anything larger like elk or moose, would be a good excuse to buy a larger bore rifle.

for deer hunting what would be your pick? 243 or 270? Reason being, my buddy wanted my 30-06, and didn’t have cash so offered me a 270. Was planning on using my 243 for deer, but I like a 270 also. I’m not invested in ammo yet for either, so I figure I’d pick one and sell the other. Rifles on the chopping block are a Henry long ranger 243, or browning a bolt 270. I don’t plan on hunting anything larger then deer anytime soon, as I’m a novice hunter. I am a decent shot with either rifle, about 1 inch at 100 yards. Does it really matter to the caliber? Or more the rifle itself you think? Thanks

If you have both, and since it sounds like you aren't going to reload so the exotic projectiles not commonly found in aren't a part of the conversation, pick up a box of federal premium Nosler Partitions for each and keep the one that shoots best.

Why is your buddy bent on trading out his 270 for a 3006?

I'd keep the 06 and 243 for for good coverage big and small.

Hes always admired my Remington 760, i wasn't attached to it so i let it go.

If i just kept the 243 for deer and coyotes, i was thinking about getting something bigger for everything else in a caliber i've never owned. I've always had an itch to get a 375 h&h, or 375 ruger, not sure about what the recoil would be like though. Most recoil i've ever experienced was a 450 marlin, or 12 gauge turkey load in a single shot shotgun.
