Hi.
Im looking for advice on buying a rifle chambered in a 243 win. Which rate of twist and bullet combo work well. Any brand of rifles recommendations?
Would mostly be using it for long shots150 yards and up for coyotes.

Would appreciate advice on a good rifle , rate of twist and bullet weight combo.

Thanks.

What part about 243 Win didnt you understand???????? :)

I've had alot of luck with 95 gr ballistic tips over 43 gr's of H4350 out of the 243 win...

Deadly on everything from Dirtpigs to Deer.
I've got a browning Abolt in 243 that I was going to sell on the EE, but the buyer backed out...
I had a guy PM me about it, but I think Im going to keep it.
Hard to part with an accurate rifle when you dont need the money anymore:)
1- 10 twist, and has been very accurate with everything from 55 gr ballistic tips to 100 gr core lokt factory ammo.

If you're not putting on a custom barrel, you're rifling twist options are limited. Most manufacturers use fast rifling as their rifles are intended for deer and antelope. Remington use 1 in 9 1/8", even on their heavy 'varmint' barrels. Savage uses 1 in 9.25". Fast rifling prefers heavy bullets. 80 grains and up.
If you plan on keeping the hides, work up a load with 90 grain FMJ's and IMR4350. Sierra makes a 90 grain FMJBT and a 107 grain Matchking. Match bullets should not be used for any other game though.
Hornady makes an 80 grain FMJ too. A Hornady 105 grain A-Max will do as well.
If you're not reloading, your choices are very limited. Most ammo makers load deer/antelope bullets. They'll do, but you'll likely have big holes in the hides.

We're still talkin' 6mm there chuckles! Just a little faster and a little more ....well....stylish I guess. 6mm AI sure is a nice cartridge and would be great for LR varmint.

My abolt 243 shoots consistently under 1" with handloads. It was doing just over 1.25 with 100 gr Rem Core-lokt.

Where do you hunt coyotes around GTA? I would be interested joining in.

The best 243 is none at all. Why wallow with wankers? There is no need to join with the pussies, just because they are in the majority. Get a good 6 MM Remington. It should have buried the feeble Winchester offering.

There is something about the 243 that disgusts me. Hype and ignorance prevail again.

Except the winchester offering buried it... Another mismanaged masterpiece from remington that went no where except hung around in a few weak circles with guys like yourself that still think the 303 british is king...
Short fat powder column of the 243 Win is pretty consistent is definately disgusting...
4-5% of case capacity makes a world of difference:jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::jerkit:
If you want to have a favourite, give er, but...
the only ignorance with regard is your opinion.

They used to be the "sleeper" in the used gun world but now the word has gotten out; but if you can find a Remington Model 788 in 243 you'll be happy. Said to be extremely accurate.

I happen to have a Remington Model 700 243. Killed deer, bears, grouse and even one snowshoe hare with it. And a domestic duck, but that's a long story. Yes, it was my duck.

It was a grumpy old Muscovy drake and he attacked his own offspring and was killing the ducklings.

At the time I only had my 243 (Goodness how things have changed) no .22, and no shotgun, so I had to dispatch him with a headshot.

AH, so pick the low percentage shot with a marginal duck caliber... your evil and should be reported to PETA:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

x2 .......... and I've never even fired a .243. :p

.

Funny thing is that I have fired a lot of 243 Winchester through my friend's rifle, but have never shot a 6 MM Remington. I found the 243 pleasant to shoot and very accurate. I am told it is very deadly on caribou.

My hatred of the 243 is purely ideological. The Remington was better but lost out to Winchester hype. As well, my position on the 243 allows me to post inflammatory denunciations of all those who dare to hold contrary opinions. That sport is almost as good as shooting itself.

65VMax 43gr Varget in a Savage or Remington if you feel like spending the money on the later. It likely won't shoot any better. You don't need the heavier bullets. They are all hard on hides and FMJ's are hard on your sleep due to the ones you wound if you have a concience;) The 65's will be across the field and the coyote will be dead before the others are out of the barrel. Anyone who thinks the fast twist barrels of the .243 won't stabilize light varmint bullets aint shot many .243's. Funny so many light bullets have been developed by those bullet companies for those barrels. Dang somebody with some dire expertise ought to have warned them it was gonna be a market failure eh!:rolleyes:.
You mentioned coyotes were the target of choice. The heavier bullets are ment more for the deer antelope size stuff. They have higher BC but that will only start to work for you out past where you should be shooting at coyotes anway. Only Captian Deadly is capable of shooting 'em past the 400 yrd mark with any consistancy.
Oh Having seen how Daryl takes care of his rifles I think his ABolt would be a good grab;)

X2 buddy ..... I'm with you. :D

Ohhh, supercub and big bill are off for a 6mm Circle-jerk!!! The 243 is the first centerfire i owned, and it has acounted for many deer, out to 280ish yards. I know how to shoot it so dont ##### about that being unethical. I foung that hornady's 75 gr HP is alot nicer to the hides than the 70 gr ballistic tip. I think coyote season is coming on isnt it. I wont ##### about the 6mm though, especially because you need a bastard-length action to run it properly
