.243 winchester

I just bought 1,450, 243- 62.5 grain bullets that I tried first to make sure they group for $140, primers for $2/100 or $15 for a 1000, powder from a friend for $10 a lb or $15-$20 at gun shows. Since starting to reload over 25 years ago I can't remember buying anything at a store price. If you have friends that reload, belong to a gun club, buy in bulk, attend gun shows you can cut your cost quite a bit more. Most of all you can fine tune your gun. A friend bought factory loads and shot great until one day he could not find that same bullet, he now reloads.
 
What gun shows do you go to? I go to my local gun show but I still haven't found anything cheaper than Wholesale Sports. They don't even go to the gun show anymore as they do great business that weekend. Everyone goes to the show to check stuff out and then go to Wholesale to buy.
 
:DReloading is a another symptom of being a gun nut. I am a reloader & admit that I have a problem. I think I can build a better hunting round:runaway:. Then you purchase firearms with proprietary cartridges & then are forced to make cartridges because they are not sold anywhere this side of the border:slap:. Then you buy the holy grail of reloading "Cartridges of the World" & realize that what everone has hunted with in Canada for the past 150 years is shat & you have found the all purpose wildcat that can take everything from gophers to sabretooth elephants with one shot!:dancingbanana: It's fun! It's great! It's all about numbers & the b.s. factor with your fellow reloaders & shooters (wife will think your completely f@%!). It doesn't cost a ton to get started with used equipment & its out there, cause once ya start, you always upgrade! "Welcome to the Darkside & embrase the feeling Luke...":welcome:

Thanks for the info everyone. I just got my Remington 700 in .243 went out and bought a Nikon scope and luepold rings and 140 bullets. I think I will keep the brass and invest in some reloading equip to get started. Any opinions on gear to start with? Also does anyone use the Federal Sierra Gamekings? I have heard good and bad.
Oh and I got the gun for doing target shooting and varmint, with the hopes of using it for deer if I can hunt somewhere else. (my wmu I can only use less than .277)

I use GameKings and think they are great. I have also used Hornady and Noslers. All are great bullets. If you are going after deer with the .243 you will want to use a heavier bullet.. try and get as close to or heavier than
100gr if you can.. unless you are using the Gameking which is a hollow point and works fine.
Be sure to place your shots though.
 
Hawk223 I attend most gun shows in Southern Ontario and the powder is not always on a table at every show but I ask lot of the venders if they have any or getting any. The best buys come from a first time vender that is giving up the sport or when someone buys out a closing sale or selling for a friend. The full time venders usually buy up the best deals before the opening of a show but I remember a show that someone bought 2 lbs of IMR4895 for $20, which I would of bought. I have a friend that is into target shooting that is near retirement and I have put my request in for what I need and want when he quits. I guess I am like a scavenger waiting to pick at the bones.
 
Check what twist rate your barrel has before going to the upper weight limit for .243/6mm's. Your rifle's barrel may not be able to stabilize a 100+ grain bullet. I think it was the Sierra website or book that mentioned twist rates for their bullets in this calibre. Can anyone alaborate on this? As I can't remember the specfic twist rates or weights that this applied to.:confused:
 
My 243 has a 1 in 14 and will not shoot anything over 87 grains thats why I bought the 62.5 grain bullets. My last gun was a 1 in 9 and shot all weights. I have a few boxes of 100 grain bullets that will not shoot and these will the cheap bullets you may find at a gun show.
